Commemorative postmark issued in honor of USS Missouri’s visit to Turkey on April 5, 1946, when the ship delivered the remains of Turkish Ambassador Mehmet Münir Ertegün. Marked by a 19-gun salute, solemn funeral procession, and a large public turnout in Istanbul, the visit reflected USS Missouri’s role in diplomacy just months after the end of World War II. | | | | |
April is the Month of the Military Child. This month’s featured artifact is a photograph of the Ebbert family, published in the Long Beach Press-Telegram on January 20, 1988. The image captures a long-awaited reunion following a six-month deployment, as YN3 Ron Ebbert is embraced by his wife, Wanda, and their three young daughters, Billie, Abbey, and Amber.
To celebrate their father’s return home, the girls had planned a special surprise: a trip to Chuck E. Cheese.

George William Eichman
June 22, 1927 – March 27, 2026
| | We honor the life and service of George William Eichman, a proud USS Missouri World War II veteran. Born in Springfield, Ohio, George enlisted in the U.S. Navy at just 16 years old in November 1943 and served as a radio operator on Admiral Halsey’s staff. He was present aboard Missouri for the historic signing of the Japanese surrender on September 2, 1945. | | |
Following his naval service, Mr. Eichman continued his commitment to his country in the U.S. Army, serving with the 82nd Airborne Division. He later pursued higher education at Wittenberg University, reflecting a lifelong dedication to learning.
Mr. Eichman shared 73 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Shirley Ann, and was a devoted father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. In his later years, he remained an active leader in his community, serving as Commodore of the Isles Yacht Club in Punta Gorda, Florida, where he helped rebuild and unite the membership after Hurricane Charley.
We extend our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones. Fair winds and following seas, shipmate.
