Martinson hired as new Ojibwe Educator for Apostle Islands National Lakeshore

Apostle Islands National Lakeshore in partnership with Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa are pleased to announce Peyton Martinson as the newly appointed Park Ranger Cultural Educator for Apostle Islands National Lakeshore (Wenabozho ominisan).

Peyton, a Red Cliff Band member, is a graduate of the Natural Resources program at Northland College. Her studies included ecological restoration and geosciences. Peyton led a plant survey during her time at Northland which provided insight for the boardwalk placement accessing Raspberry Beach. Most recently Peyton served as an AmeriCorps Farm-to-School Specialist at the Bayfield School. In this position Peyton worked with a team of agricultural educators to get students out of the classroom and into the gitigaan (garden) to learn about local healthy foods, both wild and cultivated, while celebrating food sovereignty. Peyton is also consistently involved in various cultural activities, including the Tribe’s weekly Ojibwemowin language classes, Full Moon Ceremony, annual Anishinaabemowin Gabeshiwin (language camp), and youth pow wow.

Chairwoman Nicole Boyd said “I’ve seen Peyton in action at the School District of Bayfield educating our youth, staff and community. She is a great addition to the NPS, and she will be fantastic in her new role. She’s a driven and passionate Indigenous woman who will represent Red Cliff with pride and share the stories of the Anishinaabeg lands and people.”

Vice-chair Rick Peterson added, “On behalf of the Red Cliff Tribal Council, I’d like to congratulate Peyton. The establishment of this position has been a collaboration between the National Park Service and the Red Cliff Band in our ongoing mission to build a bridge between the Red Cliff community and the Park Service. The duties and responsibilities of this position will be a critical piece in achieving that goal.”

In her new role, Peyton will work with the Apostle Islands visitor service and education team to enhance public and staff understanding of Ojibwe culture. Peyton will help integrate Ojibwe language, traditional knowledge, and Ojibwe perspectives into park operations. She will continue to work with Ojibwe language programs in local schools and surrounding Tribal communities. Aho!

Chi-Miigwech to Red Cliff Community Health Representatives (CHR/CHW)

The Community Health Representative/Workers focus on health promotion and disease prevention. They are the boots on the ground connecting the community to services, and their work has become essential to the primary health care system. CHR/CHWs are great advocates, in part because they come from the communities they serve and have tribal cultural understanding.

The CHR positions were one of the first healthcare providers in the Red Cliff community. We remember many of them providing WIC, transportation, immunization clinics, and hosting many community events. Today’s CHR/CHWs provide many of the same services and were instrumental in keeping the community safe during the Covid-19 pandemic.

If you are interested in becoming a CHR/CHW, the Health Center is currently hiring. View position details and apply here.

Celebrate who we are, commemorate our achievements, & collaborate with equity.

Harm Reduction - Keep our Community "SAFE"
Saving lives from HIV and Hepatitis C requires aggressive strategies to reach people at high risk. The purpose of the Red Cliff SAFE Program is to help reduce harm from risky behaviors.

The SAFE Program is operated out of the Red Cliff Community Health Center. This program is available to all members of the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa as well as surrounding communities. Individuals can access clean syringes, sharps containers, sterile water, antibiotic cream, alcohol wipes, and condoms. By improving access to these materials, we help people who inject heroin, meth, and other drugs to reduce their risk of contracting HIV and Hepatitis C.

In addition, the Red Cliff Community Health Center now offers Narcan. Narcan is for the emergency treatment of known or suspected opioid overdose. When you come in for our needle exchange, you can request a dose(s) of Narcan at no charge to you.

If you or a loved one are at risk for HIV or Hepatitis C, we will never judge you or your behaviors. You can access the services by simply stopping at the health center reception and asking for the SAFE Program. The services are provided within the health center setting and are completely confidential.

The goal is to expand sites within the next year. The current services are available Monday – Friday, 8:00am-4:30pm except holidays. You can get more information by calling (715) 779-3707.
For other Health Center information or general questions call: 715-779-3707 or Email  [email protected]

Birch Bark Harvesting Opportunities

Tribal Members have opportunities to collect birch bark from US Forest Service potential timber sale locations. Opportunities are available in Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest and Ottawa National Forest.

Anyone interested should follow this link, then click on the "birch maps" tab. Under that tab, there are maps of both national forests that show the areas open to birch bark collecting and the approximate size of trees in that stand, if that data is available.

Please note: Tribal members should not remove bark from trees that are already marked with paint. Birch bark can be collected until a timber sale contract has been awarded. Once a timber sale contract has been awarded, tribal members would need to get permission from the timber sale purchaser to collect birch bark within the timber sale units.

If anyone has questions, they can contact contact Alex Bohman at [email protected] or 715-685-2125.
