2020 Census - What is it and Why does it matter?

What is the Census?
Every 10 years, the United States counts everyone living in the country on April 1.
It is especially important for American Indians and Alaska Natives to participate.
Each household will receive a notice to complete the census. Keep an eye out!
Why should I participate?
The Census is a chance to help create a better future for our community. Providing accurate information on our population shapes how federal funding is given out each year to our communities. This includes grants, food assistance, health, and other programs that benefit communities like Red Cliff.
Responding to the Census is easy, safe, and important. Your responses are confidential by law. The data is used in ways that can benefit Native people and our communities.

Wisconsin DNR Releases 2019 Field Notes

A note from the Wisconsin DNR Director
|
|
Wisconsin’s rare plants, animals and landscapes make our state special. Our dedicated and skilled DNR Natural Heritage Conservation staff, partners, volunteers and donors work together to protect and restore these valuable resources as a natural legacy for the generations that follow.
Many sobering wildlife reports this past year have underscored the threats to nature. We learned the Earth’s plant and animal species are vanishing at rates tens to hundreds of times higher than over the last 10 million years. We learned that North America’s breeding bird populations have dropped by 3 billion birds (nearly 30%) since the 1970s, even some of our most iconic and
familiar species.
We were already well aware of these issues, having seen these trends in Wisconsin, too. But we’re thankful more people are learning of the challenges facing wildlife globally and here at home — and the need to continue and expand our efforts.
Fortunately, we have recent conservation successes to celebrate, and it’s great to be able to share those with you in our 2019 Field Notes. These pages, only scratching the surface
of what we’ve accomplished together in the last year, remind us of the fantastic work being done here in Wisconsin.

Snow Removal & Road Clearing - How You Can Help

With winter upon us and as heavy snow accumulates, our crews are hard at work to ensure our roads are cleared and we can all move around safely.
With limited equipment and only three people working to clear snow, we're asking you for help and to respect others' needs! Here's what you can do:
-Avoid parking on the road. This makes it difficult for our equipment to plow the roads
-Avoid pushing driveway snow in to the road

Harm Reduction -- Keep Our Community "SAFE"
|
|
Saving lives from HIV and Hepatitis C requires aggressive strategies to reach people at high risk. The purpose of the Red Cliff SAFE Program is to help reduce harm from risky behaviors.
The SAFE Program is operated out of the Red Cliff Community Health Center. This program is available to all members of the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa as well as surrounding communities. Individuals can access clean syringes, sharps containers, sterile water, antibiotic cream, alcohol wipes, and condoms. By improving access to these materials, we help people who inject heroin, meth, and other drugs to reduce their risk of contracting HIV and Hepatitis C.
In addition, the Red Cliff Community Health Center now offers Narcan. Narcan is for the emergency treatment of known or suspected opioid overdose. When you come in for our needle exchange, you can request a dose(s) of Narcan at no charge to you.
If you or a loved one are at risk for HIV or Hepatitis C, we will never judge you or your behaviors. You can access the services by simply stopping at the health center reception and asking for the SAFE Program. The services are provided within the health center setting and are completely confidential.
The goal is to expand sites within the next year. The current services are available Monday – Friday, 8:00am-4:30pm except holidays.

Business Spotlight: Copper Crow Distillery
|
|
Owned by Tribal members Curt and Linda Basina
|
|
Linda and Curt Basina opened Copper Crow Distillery in Red Cliff back in April of 2018, making it the first distillery within Tribal boundaries anywhere nationwide.
Copper Crow is located at 37395 State Highway 13 in Red Cliff, just four miles north of Bayfield and across the street from Buffalo Bay Store and gas station which Curt and Linda sold to the Tribe about two years ago.
Copper Crow features high-quality premium spirits, including vodka, rum, whiskey, gin, and brandy. Most impressively, Curt and Linda handle each stage of production in-house. Everything from fermenting and distilling to bottling and labeling is done by Curt and Linda. They even make their own syrups and ingredients that go into the cocktails.
Of course, tastings are available, but Curt also leads fascinating tours of the entire process and equipment. It becomes obvious early on in one of his tours that Curt is incredibly knowledgeable, and he makes it fun to learn how their great-tasting cocktails are made.
Curt is now highlighting some new products, including whey vodka and gin. With this new offering, Copper Crow is one of less than 12 businesses in the world distilling whey vodka.
Copper Crow is a member of the Bayfield Chamber, and is currently open on the weekends. Its winter hours include Fridays from 4-7 pm, Saturdays from 1-7 pm, and Sundays from 11 am – 4 pm. They will begin to open on Thursdays and expand daily hours once summer rolls around.
Curt and Linda work with their distributor Capitol Husting Wine & Liquor to sell their products all over Wisconsin, and their spirits can be found in each corner of the state.
Natives of Bayfield and Washburn, Linda and Curt are high school sweethearts, and both graduated from Bayfield School. Scott worked for the Highway Patrol for 17 years in Superior before retiring in the early 2000's. Linda is a teacher’s aide for the special education department at Bayfield School.
They grew to love traveling together, and would stop in any local wineries, breweries, or distilleries. One day, they started thinking about it from a business perspective. They attended a national convention in Louisville in 2015 and decided to go for it. In 2016 they formed their corporation, and in 2017 they began production of their spirits before opening the doors to customers in 2018.
Inside the distillery, you’ll notice a very relaxing yet fun atmosphere. A unique aspect Curt shows pride in is the table tops. They are made from reclaimed bowling lane wood from the old Du Pont Civic Center four-lane bowling alley in Washburn. Curt worked there back in his high school years and would hand-place the bowling pins on the same wood used for his table tops.
