Update on ARPA Funding Projects

March 2023

Boozhoo! Red Cliff Tribal Leadership and Staff continue to plan and fulfill the multiple approved ARPA SLFRF projects for the Gaa-Miskwaabikaang community. Current large project updates include:

Cultural Center

The building is in the final design stages. The project team is working through the mechanical design needs for the building's energy systems and will soon have the construction drawings ready to go out for bids for a General Contractor. Architects and engineers are working on the needed improvements for developing Nuzzo Road, along with water, sewer, electricity, and fiber internet. Once a General Contractor is secured, construction of the new Cultural Center will begin, as early as this summer.

Housing at Shodeen Property

Master planning and design of the Shodeen Property has begun with the hired architects and engineers. General design goals and project timelines have been discussed. Preliminary designs will be posted in the near future for community input and feedback, please watch for notices. Miigwech to everyone who has contributed to the “naming” survey for this project. The top two choices are still receiving votes and will be posted for a few more weeks and shared with the community when completed.

With the interests of the short- and long-term priorities for the Gaa-Miskwaabikaang Community, the Red Cliff Tribal Council continues to assess feedback from the community. Please direct any questions to [email protected]. Below is a summary of how Red Cliff’s ARPA SLFRF $43,410,982 have been allocated to date.

Visit www.redcliff-nsn.gov/ARP to view all previous ARPA funding updates.

Gravel Road Maintenance and Seasonal Closures

Last fall the road maintenance department spent many hours and valuable resources on all gravel roads to try and keep them in good condition throughout the fall and into the spring. However, with the amount and timing of rainfall we received directly before the first snowfall, roads became potholed and washboard.

Roads were rough in the beginning of the snow removal season, but road maintenance staff were able to blade them off to make the surface smooth and drivable throughout the winter. With the recent warm weather, the snow cap that had been maintained all winter is melting off and exposing the potholes making driving hazardous and unpleasant. Road Maintenance staff had attempted to smooth the surface this week with scarifier blades.

Road Closure Signs

The gravel roads experience this same phenomenon every spring and usually must wait until the road surface and subsurface thaw enough to machine grade. There is little that can be done until the conditions are right for use of the road grader. As a result, the road maintenance staff will be placing “road closed” signs on several roads – including Bradum Road and others that will be identified as they develop. Travel on these will be at your own risk.

Community Support & Patience

Adding to this already challenging situation, roads staff were accosted by a community member while performing important de-icing maintenance on a culvert. This incident has led to the resignation of one of the Tribe’s most experienced road maintenance employees. The care of our road system will certainly suffer with the loss of this individual. We are hoping that we do not lose more personnel because of similar reported incidents.

We ask that the community please have patience and be respectful to our roads staff. They work diligently to provide road maintenance services for the community. Please contact the Tribal Administration Building with any questions at 715-779-3700

School Partnerships Continue, Alt-Ed Students Lift Nets

Bayfield middle school and high school alternative education students lifted their nets for the final time of the season last week in Gaa-Miskwaabikaang as part of a partnership between the Tribe and the school district. Winter Parking Reminder

Community members are reminded to abide by the Winter Parking Regulations so the roads crews can safely and efficiently remove snow. Harm Reduction - Keep our Community "SAFE"
Saving lives from HIV and Hepatitis C requires aggressive strategies to reach people at high risk. The purpose of the Red Cliff SAFE Program is to help reduce harm from risky behaviors.

The SAFE Program is operated out of the Red Cliff Community Health Center. This program is available to all members of the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa as well as surrounding communities. Individuals can access clean syringes, sharps containers, sterile water, antibiotic cream, alcohol wipes, and condoms. By improving access to these materials, we help people who inject heroin, meth, and other drugs to reduce their risk of contracting HIV and Hepatitis C.

In addition, the Red Cliff Community Health Center now offers Narcan. Narcan is for the emergency treatment of known or suspected opioid overdose. When you come in for our needle exchange, you can request a dose(s) of Narcan at no charge to you.

If you or a loved one are at risk for HIV or Hepatitis C, we will never judge you or your behaviors. You can access the services by simply stopping at the health center reception and asking for the SAFE Program. The services are provided within the health center setting and are completely confidential.

The goal is to expand sites within the next year. The current services are available Monday – Friday, 8:00am-4:30pm except holidays. You can get more information by calling (715) 779-3707.
For other Health Center information or general questions call: 715-779-3707 or Email  [email protected]
