CCS welcomes Jamie Vernon

Jamie is a recent graduate of Northland College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology and a minor in Native American Studies. She completed her internship in Red Cliff through the ROSS program and has recently accepted the Service Facilitator position through Comprehensive Community Services (CCS).

Jamie believes that all humans are intricately connected to one another as well as to the greater web of life. To her this means if we are all to be well, we must work hard to support and nourish each other.

Jamie spends her free time strengthening her connection to the natural world by enjoying time backpacking, snowshoeing, gardening, running, and meditating, often with the people she loves as well as solo. Jamie looks forward to building connections in the community, learning from those connections and offering her skills and experience in return.

To learn more about CCS and to access resources, please call the Red Cliff Community Health Center at 715-779-3707.

Harm Reduction - Keep our Community "SAFE"
Saving lives from HIV and Hepatitis C requires aggressive strategies to reach people at high risk. The purpose of the Red Cliff SAFE Program is to help reduce harm from risky behaviors.

The SAFE Program is operated out of the Red Cliff Community Health Center. This program is available to all members of the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa as well as surrounding communities. Individuals can access clean syringes, sharps containers, sterile water, antibiotic cream, alcohol wipes, and condoms. By improving access to these materials, we help people who inject heroin, meth, and other drugs to reduce their risk of contracting HIV and Hepatitis C.

In addition, the Red Cliff Community Health Center now offers Narcan. Narcan is for the emergency treatment of known or suspected opioid overdose. When you come in for our needle exchange, you can request a dose(s) of Narcan at no charge to you.

If you or a loved one are at risk for HIV or Hepatitis C, we will never judge you or your behaviors. You can access the services by simply stopping at the health center reception and asking for the SAFE Program. The services are provided within the health center setting and are completely confidential.

The goal is to expand sites within the next year. The current services are available Monday – Friday, 8:00am-4:30pm except holidays. You can get more information by calling (715) 779-3707.
For other Health Center information or general questions call: 715-779-3707 or Email  RCHealthCenter@redcliffhealth.org

SAVE Plan for Student Loan Repayment

The Red Cliff Education Department and Library can help community members applying for the SAVE program to save on their student loan repayments. This program is recommended for folks who have a high monthly loan payment and may save people in paying a more "affordable" amount or may assist in forgiving some of the amount.

The Saving on a Valuable Education (SAVE) Plan, like other income-driven repayment (IDR) plans, calculates your monthly payment amount based on your income and family size. The SAVE Plan provides the lowest monthly payments of any IDR plan available to nearly all student borrowers.

Birch Bark Harvesting Opportunities

Tribal Members have opportunities to collect birch bark from US Forest Service potential timber sale locations. Opportunities are available in Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest and Ottawa National Forest.

Anyone interested should follow this link, then click on the "birch maps" tab. Under that tab, there are maps of both national forests that show the areas open to birch bark collecting and the approximate size of trees in that stand, if that data is available.

Please note: Tribal members should not remove bark from trees that are already marked with paint. Birch bark can be collected until a timber sale contract has been awarded. Once a timber sale contract has been awarded, tribal members would need to get permission from the timber sale purchaser to collect birch bark within the timber sale units.

If anyone has questions, they can contact contact Alex Bohman at abohman@glifwc.org or 715-685-2125.
