Mike Larsen Exhibit
Reception: Sept. 5th from 6 to 7:30p

On Display through Oct. 30th
The Goddard Center is excited to invite you and your family to engage with the bold expressionistic paintings of Chickasaw artist Mike Larsen from Tuesday, September 1st through Friday, October 30th. Mr. Larsen is a painter and sculptor of history. He has been a professional artist for 50 years. There will be a reception for Mr. Larsen on Saturday, September 5th from 6 to 7:30pm. Goddard Center exhibits and receptions are always free and open to the public.
"Northwest Mask"
Researching the people and events Mr. Larsen paints and sculpts, he spends much of his studio time in books and on the internet - historical accuracy being as important as his palette. He creates paintings and sculpture commissioned by Governments, Corporations and Individuals located throughout the United States.

Mr. Larsen likes to think of his sculpture as three-dimensional painting. He leaves the marks left by his fingers in the clay as he does the brushstrokes on the canvas, believing that most effectively shows the emotion of a painting or sculpture.

"They Ruled the Plains"
Mr. Larsen is known for his very large paintings, and also for one very tiny one - the U.S. postage stamp commemorating the Oklahoma Centennial in 2007. His love of painting Native Peoples comes from his Chickasaw Ancestry in whose "Hall of Fame" he was installed in 2000. As his work has increased across the country, engaging viewers and moving hearts, so have his honors. In 2015 Mr. Larsen was named to the "Oklahoma Hall of Fame,” and in 2016 he was installed into the "Oklahoma Historian's Hall of Fame.” Mike Larsen's autobiography "Don't Never be Afraid of Your Horses" was published in the spring of 2017.

"Memories"
Perhaps the project closest to his heart is the Chickasaw Nation's Living Elders project: 72 portraits of Elders of the Nation. The commission was begun in 2005 with 24 portraits and has continued with two more groups of Elders. The latest group of portraits were installed at the Chickasaw Cultural Center in the fall of 2019.
"Lawman"
The galleries can be viewed during scheduled business hours Tuesday through Thursday 10am to 6pm, Fridays from 10am to 5pm, and Saturdays from 1 to 4pm.
