5 Tips to Teach Your Child to Save Money

It's important to start teaching your children good savings habits as early as possible. When you give them the education and ability to save, you're setting them up for future success! Here are some great tips to get started:

1. Discuss Wants vs. Needs
Explain that needs include the basics, such as food, shelter, and clothing, and wants are all the extras.

2. Let Them Earn Their Own Money
Giving kids their own money provides them with the opportunity to learn how to use it. When you offer allowances in exchange for chores, they're also learning the value of their hard work.

3. Set Savings Goals
Helping children define a savings goal can be a better way to get them motivated.

4. Provide a Place to Save
Open your child an account at MilWay so they can watch their savings grow! Our ABC Savings Account is great for kids 10 and under. Just a $5.00 deposit is all it takes to open the account, plus family members can easily make "special occasion " deposits to help boost funds and encourage young savers.   Learn more about savings options.

5. Leave Room for Mistakes
It's tempting to step in and steer kids away from a potentially costly mistake, but it may be better to use that mistake as a teachable moment. That way they'll know in the future what not to do with their cash.

Credit Card Balance Transfer:
A Smart Move?
It's our goal to make sure you have the knowledge and tools to make smart financial decisions and reach your goals. And if one of those goals is paying off debt, a balance transfer could be a step in the right direction.

How do balance transfers work?
A balance transfer is when you pay off the balances on existing credit cards or loans by transferring them to another credit card account.

What are the benefits of a balance transfer?
When you're paying interest on credit cards or loans, transferring that debt to a card with a lower interest rate can help you reduce the overall amount of interest you're charged as you pay it off, saving you money. You can also consolidate multiple balances into one easy, more manageable payment.

How can MilWay help?
Our friendly loan officers will go over your options, weigh the pros and cons, and help you move your balances to our low rate credit card. Talk to us about a balance transfer today!
