Here are some simple tricks to help them learn:
Here are some simple tricks to help them learn
Trick #1: Four piggy banks, not one!
Want a smart way for kids to control their money? Use four little banks. Label each bank with the way they’ll use the money: SAVE, SPEND, INVEST, and GIVE.
-
A spending bank for money to be used soon on everyday things.
-
A saving bank for money to be used later on larger items.
-
An investing bank for money that will be used several years from now.
-
A giving bank for gifts to help others.
Kids can decorate each bank with stickers, photographs, cut-outs from magazines — or their own drawings. The pictures show how the money will be used.
Trick #2: Set Savings Goals!
How much should kids save each month? That depends what they’re saving for. For example, your child wants to buy a new bike, but they have to save $100 of the bike’s price before you will pay the rest. If they set a goal to save $25 each month ($6.25 a week), they could buy that bike in four months!
Trick #3: Save First, Not Last!
What’s the FIRST thing to do when kids get paid? They divide their money and put it in the four banks. If they want that bike, they have to be sure that money goes into the SAVE bank FIRST.
Trick #4: Cut your expenses
Get a notebook that they use only to keep track of their money. They will write down any money they spend. Have kids list what they bought, when they bought it, how much it cost, and why they bought the item. For example, they may find that they spend $5 a week on snacks from vending machines at school. Are those snacks worth that money? Or would they rather save that money for something else? Don’t eat the snacks, and they get closer to buying their bike.
Trick #5: When they do spend, remind them to be a smart shopper
Check out prices. Figure out where they can get the best buy for the money. Look for sales and coupons. If they save a dollar, that means they can spend it on something else. Or add it to the SAVE bank for that bike.
