The Bolt

WHERE TO NEXT?

Hello Traveler,

It’s 9:31pm Tuesday night just two weeks ago, and I’m on the back of a Vespa holding on tight to a well-dressed Italian man as we take off down Via San Pietro in the center of Milan.

It was a scorching 93 degrees today so the evening breeze is a welcome contrast to the heat still radiating from the concrete.

We’ve just finished dinner with friends who we’ve known for years but haven’t seen since the fall of 2017 when we lived in Madrid.  My eyes gaze around the quintessential Italian restaurant – waiters in white jackets buzzing about, photos of famous patrons lining the walls, diners with plates of pasta, pizza and seafood in front of them.  I think this is what many American Italian restaurants are modeled after.

Back outside in the heat, our friends ask Jessie and I if we want to do a night tour of the city on the backs of their scooters.

We look at each other and both say… YES!

I hop on the back of Danilo’s and Jessie went with his daughter.  We weave through traffic, passing piazzas, Sempione Park and important governmental buildings (see some videos here... #1 #2).  Danilo shows me the sites – including the resting spot of Silvio Berlusconi, the controversial former Prime Minister who just passed away.  We stop at a red light and Eugenia and Jessie catch up to us.  I mention what Danilo has pointed out to Jessie.  Her friend offers up that she’s instead showing Jessie the fun restaurants, bars and where her friends live.  Priorities.

Where do we end up?

At their favorite gelato shop.

Not just any gelato shop (Milan has 40+).  It’s the gelato shop they’ve been coming to for 20 years.  There’s a line out the door and down the block.   It’s off the beaten path, but a must visit so I chose it as this week’s Highlight.  Read more below.

Milan not only has fun Vespa rides and delicious gelato. There are many more reasons to visit:

  • to see the iconic Last Supper and learn about Leonardo Da Vinci
  • to go shopping at high fashion designers and lesser known boutiques
  • to visit the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II for shopping and simply admiring the beauty
  • to see the stunning architecture of the Duomo
  • to dine at Michelin star restaurants, including Enrico Bartolini al Mudec with 3 stars.

Jessie joined me on a site visit at Galleria VIK Milano. It is the ONLY hotel within the Galleria, and from this privileged location you can gaze out the window to peoplewatch below. For those who love to be surrounded by art, it is the perfect choice for your stay in Milan.

This week's Hot New Hotel Opening may remind you of the one from June 21. I think I am in a cozy, Northern European mood!

Read articles below for inspiration on Europe's best yachting destinations, where to go island hopping, the world's most romantic destinations and some ideas for where to go to enjoy a crowd-free summer getaway. There is a quote in that article that I've adapted here...

"Why battle the crowds in Europe next summer when there are so many charming, even unexpected, destinations?"

My take on the above:

  • Avoid places like Rome and the Amalfi Coast in the peak of summer travel season - instead go in May/early June or late September/early October.
  • Select less mainstream places - our trip to the Dolomites in early July never felt crowded because we were outdoors in vast mountains for much of the trip and the small mountain towns were "vibey" but not overly full (warning - August is very crowded because so many Italians vacation here).
  • Choose different countries all together - the Azores in Portugal are so beautiful with gorgeous hikes, wineries, natural coastal pools and unique dining experiences; Slovenia, next door to Italy, offers incredible food, scenery and warm locals and Norway, highlighted below, is an incredible place for fishing, fjords and exploring your inner James Bond.

Wherever you decide to go, my advice will continue to be - plan ahead. And I will remind you of this over the coming months because friends don't let friends wait until January to plan their summer vacations. By then it will be too late to get the best of everything. And I want you to have the best of everything.

Below you will also see articles on the world's most powerful passport and how the summer heat is impacting travel and what to do about it. Also the NY Times has a new section - Travel 101: Our Favorite Hacks, Hints and How-Tos.

Enjoy your week!

  • This week's highlight - Il Massimo del Gelato, Milan
  • Hot New Hotel Opening - The Bolder Skylodges in Norway
  • Inspiration + Information

IL MASSIMO DEL GELATO

Il Massimo del Gelato sticks to the basics. No tables, no bathrooms, no real seating area inside or out (save one little bench).

They focus on making the best gelato possible. Their name actually means "the best gelato." 100% natural ingredients that create the most delicious, creamy gelato you've ever tasted.

Simple flavors like fior di latte and pistachio.

But my favorite is that they make up to 10 different kinds of chocolate gelato! Including 80%, 75% dark chocolate, chocolate with chili, Grand Marnier and Cioccolato Jamaica.

They are located in Milan but not in the center. It's a bit off the beaten path. You have to work a bit to get here. And it is worth it! Sadly I forgot to take pictures of our gelato, so you'll just have to go see it for yourself.

Do you hear that?

No, what is it?

Nothing. Just silence.

Watching the steam rise from the mug of coffee cupped in your hands, you are surrounded by cloud like pillows and soft blankets in your delightfully cozy bed. You gaze out at vastness - deep fjords, massive mountains and blue skies.

You wonder - what will you do today?

Stay in bed a little later, take life a little slower and then decide. You are at the Bolder Starlodges and this is slow travel at its best.

🌟In February, The Bolder Starlodges opened in Lysefjorden, located on Norway’s west coast.

Why visit?

  • You are as close to sleeping in the clouds as you will ever get! The Bolder's six cabins are built to blend in with the landscape and give guests the feeling of floating in the fjord.
  • Nature is the main attraction. Hike on walking trails directly from your doorstep.  Just a ten minute drive away is the starting point to the incredible Pulpit Rock or a bit further go to the iconic Kjeragbolten known as "the Bolt" (top photo).
  • The two story cabins have designer Vipp kitchens on the top floor, a bedroom and bathroom on the lower and floor-to-ceiling windows with stunning views of the fjord. Don’t want to cook?  You can order prepared breakfast and tapas spreads directly to your cabin. Or plan a picnic almost anywhere to enjoy more spectacular views.
  • The area offers so many contrasts - enjoy local food, learn about Norwegian industrial history, hike to magnificent waterfalls, study Nordic architecture and learn about what life was like long ago.
  • Visit a farm to taste the freshest local apples, pears and cherries. Visit a family-owned smokehouse that produces world-class smoked and cured salmon.
  • Enjoy local halibut and salmon, caught in the fjords.
  • Relax and recharge and embrace slow travel, while high above the Lyserfjord.

Looking at these pictures you can see why Forbes named The Bolder one of the top 25 surprising places to sleep around the world and Architectural Digest designated it one of the best new design hotels.
