MileStone Academy May 2022 News & Updates
|
|
Greetings Dear Friend,
Welcome to MileStone Academy's May 2022 Newsletter!
The last month of school is bittersweet at Milestone Academy. After a long year with many challenges, we will close another school year. This year, we will say goodbye to six young men, four of whom have been with us for their high school experience. These young men exemplify the Milestone vision statement created in 2015 “To educate students with complex learning challenges, so they become confident, productive twenty-first-century learners.” They leave Milestone Academy having charted their path; some will continue their education, and others will begin looking for employment. Regardless of where they go or what they do, we are proud of them and look forward to hearing about their successes.
While teachers and students excitedly await a well-deserved summer break, parents need to find ways to keep their children occupied for two months. There are so many options - camps for all interests, ESY programs at local schools, and programs at recreation/community centers and cultural institutions. Older students can look for internships or employment (see our article for finding summer employment in Philadelphia). Now is the time to prepare for this shift.
Summer should be fun, but parents need to be mindful that most students suffer a loss of learning during the summer. According to researchers, the average students’ achievement scores decline over summer vacation by one month’s worth of school-year learning; declines were sharper for math and reading. Parents should talk to their school to find out if there is a summer package, reading assignment, or educational programs that students can engage in for the summer to help mitigate the loss.
Respectfully,
Michele Hewitt-Webster

Self-esteem determines how much someone likes themselves, and if they feel they have value or a sense of self-worth. Teens with high self-esteem feel accepted, have a sense of pride, and believe in themselves. Teens with low self-esteem feel bad about themselves and think they are not good enough. Read More

There are some exceptions to these limits for working teens. For example, many states have tighter restrictions on the hours a minor can work on a farm. Minors employed by their parents, on the other hand, do not have as many restrictions on times and days worked. Read More.
