Milford Mill Academy Building and Construction Technology magnet program earns DEWALT Grow the Trades Grant

The Milford Mill Academy Building and Construction Technology magnet program has earned a DEWALT 2024 Grow the Trades Grant for helping high school students build foundational construction skills and introducing them to the electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) trades.

Milford Mill’s Building and Construction Technology program was selected as one of 166 organizations that are providing greater accessibility and resources for trades training. While in the program, Milford students can earn National Center for Construction and Education Core and Occupational Safety and Health Administration 10 certifications.

Instructor Jason J. Smith has led the program for four years and has taught for 20 years. Under his tutelage, all students enrolled in the program have earned both certifications before graduating.

More information about the grant can be found in a BCPS news release.

BCPS Close-Up: Robert Holland, band director, Woodlawn High School

Making a way for the superstars of tomorrow

A new BCPS Close-Up blog post spotlights Robert Holland, band director of Woodlawn High School's Scarlet Legion. The post was written and photographed by Andrew Hall, an apprentice in the BCPS Office of Communications and Community Outreach and a senior at Woodlawn High.

From the blog post:

  • Many members of the Scarlet Legion band described their director as a father figure, someone whom any student could go to whenever they needed advice, motivation, comfort, or simply a laugh. Holland creates a family atmosphere for his band and provides an unparalleled mentorship role for his students. When asked how it feels to be an inspiration to the next generation of musicians, he said, "It’s quite an honor. Throughout my life, in high school and even now, most of my mentors were my band directors." He continued, "I can never go back and repay them, the only thing I can do is impart into the next generation what was imparted into me."

  • When asked if it was accurate to say he had dedicated his life to music, Holland quickly corrected the question saying, “I have dedicated my life to making a way for up-and-coming young students. Music is just the vehicle I use. My dedication lies in helping to nurture students.”

"Overgrown" by Diana Roadas-Hernandez, Grade 11, Perry Hall High School. This artwork was featured in last school year's East Zone Exhibit in The Superintendent's Gallery at BCPS headquarters.

Artist Statement:

For this artwork, I wanted to do a simple landscape with a small silhouette as the main focus. I also really wanted to make texture be emphasized all around so that my painting seemed more realistic. The main idea this artwork explores is growth; I tried to portray growth through the vines on the tree, which is also another main focus. The vines are a bit more overgrown than they are in the original picture that I was referencing, which I thought was an interesting way to portray growth and abundance through my artwork.
