MYC After School Program - January 2019!

Happy New Year! We hope 2018 brought you programs that you loved! Coming up in 2019 we will hit the ground running with some great new programs as well as some returning loved ones! Adding to our calendar on Mondays from 3:30-4:30 for the month of January will be a new program called Fit Camp, which is sponsored by Milford Regional Hospital! Fit Camp will be an exercise program that explores circuit training, strength training, and yoga through body weight, stability balls, jump ropes and small dumbbells! It is a great opportunity for kids to get their bodies moving and learn how to properly exercise! We will also be adding a one-hour session for high school students to utilize our weight room! High school weight room will be from 4:00-5:00 on Wednesdays. Also, on Wednesdays we will be having a dodgeball game from 4:00-5:00, which is always a great "hit"! On Friday January 4th Indoor Plane Flying will return from 5:00-6:00, this is a great opportunity to learn how to fly model airplanes, it is brought to us by volunteers from Millis Model Aircrafts! We will have one special nail salon on Friday the 25th starting at 3:00!

Due to the popularity of our boxing program (thank you Mark & Shalton), we needed to change the schedule to accommodate such high volume! Starting January 3rd, we will be splitting boxing into two age groups! On Tuesdays our after school members who are ages 12+ will be boxing at 3:30! On Thursdays our after-school members who are ages 8-11 will be boxing at 3:30. This change will allow for more one-on-one instruction and will allow for safer boxing. Our boxing coaches have also requested that if your child plans to participate in sparring, that they have their own properly fitted mouthguard! In January crafts will switch from Wednesdays at 3:30 to Thursdays at 3:30! For the month of January, we will continue Homework Help from 4:00-5:00 on Mondays, Quiet Zone from 3:30-4:30 on Tuesdays, Youth Council from 4:00-5:00 on Wednesdays, and Nutrition at 3:30 on Fridays!

The Milford Youth Center has become the focal point for the children of Milford. It hosts many different activities and events throughout the year for the youth of Milford and/or the Milford Schools. The Milford Youth Center's after school program is open for youth ages 8-18, free of charge, from 2-6 pm, Monday through Friday (check monthly calendar, website and social media for any changes due to weather, holidays or vacation weeks).  All Youth members must be picked up by time of closing (unless they walk home).  Pick up is outside of the building on 24 Pearl St. Please visit our  website  for both our  weather policy  and  traffic control plan

All participants must fill out a  registration form annually to be a member. Once this form is completed and returned to the Center, the member will be provided with a key tag and ID number. (if they are new members to the program). This will be how the Youth Center staff will track attendance. Therefore, all members are required to bring in their key tag in order to enter the facility. If key tag is lost, the Center will charge $1.00 for replacement.

The game room, lounge and gymnasium will be offered daily. There will be structured programs that participants must sign up for to participate in. Members are also able to use our washer and dryer, free of charge during operation hours. The Center also offers a free snack and dinner program, due to the collaboration of CACFP, Hockomock Area YMCA and the Milford School Food & Nutrition Services department.

Volunteers are always welcome to assist with the after-school program or during the morning hours! We are always looking for help during the after school hours, 2-6 PM. You may also run a program/activity during the after-school program. We also need volunteers for our monthly evening events. Please  contact us  here if you would like to volunteer.

MYC Youth Council (MYCYC) Updates:  January 2019

This past month has been very busy for MYC Youth Council! Youth Council is a leadership and community service-based organization comprised of Afterschool members of all ages striving to make a difference in the community through facilitating several youth community events as well as taking part in volunteer opportunities!

The first weekend of this month, Youth Council voted on a theme for the MYC float for the Santa Parade and settled on Polar Express! Youth Council was also fortunate to have Muffin from the Milford Junior Women's Club reach out and ask us to decorate a tree for their annual Gala of Trees event! Our tree theme this year was Milford!

Youth Council also decided to give back to the MYC's wonderful volunteers, who have become like family to us at the MYC by decorating ornaments to hand out at our holiday party, which was hosted thanks to the many generous  organizations and
individual donors who offered to sponsor children at the Youth Center for their holiday gifts!

For our final meeting of the month, Youth Council was joined by Ana Paulino, the founder of Michael's Mission '97 and U Matter! We all would like to give Ana a huge thank you for sharing her story with us and for asking us to be involved with her wonderful projects!

Milford Youth Center (MYC) mission  is to provide a safe environment that promotes self esteem, builds character, and fosters the notion of community and the importance of respecting and serving others. For more information, click here .

The  MYC  works together with other community organizations to provide resources and opportunities for youth to make healthy decisions. The MYC works to provide local youth with the necessary activities and events that help them develop physically, mentally, socially and emotionally through their childhood years. By providing Milford youth with these types of programs and a safe environment during the after school hours and during our monthly events, we hope to address adolescent risk factors as well as promoting the partnership among community members to ensure a comprehensive vision and plan for the health of the youth in the town of Milford.
