MYC Fashion Show a Success!

We would like to thank everyone that helped make our 9th Annual "Dressed Up, Not Messed Up" Youth Fashion Show a success this year! Over 30 youth participated in the event! Each year the show gets better and better, with more youth participating and community involvement but we did have a transition year and just hired our new program coordinator this last month so instead of cancelling the event we decided to still do it but at a smaller scale! The show must go on!

We would specifically like to thank: TJ MAXX of Milford, Chair Secrets by Meredith Carbary, Carolyn Federico, Glamour Hair Salon, The Chop Shop, Jay's Classic Barbershop, Next Generation Barbershop, Siobhan Foley, Giana Acquafresca, Olivia Acquafresca, Brooke Ferreira, Kaleigh Wilcox, Jake Cahill, Eduarda Costa, Danica Crim, Patricia Fernandes, Yvy Lima, Juliana Morin, Sebastian Soares, Victoria Williams, Milford TV, John & Darlene Dulude, Elissa Hayes and Elissa's Cakes, DJ Ron Auger, Pizza Palace, MYC staff and all the amazing youth participants!

Through this event we look to raise awareness about underage drinking and help teens become better informed about the dangers of alcohol so they can make healthy decisions throughout life. We also hope this event helps to increase youth self-esteem and attitudes toward their body image. When we created this event years ago, along with JAG we were following the Search Institute's, 40 Developmental Assets, which are 40 research based, positive experiences and qualities that influence young people's development, helping them become caring, responsible and productive adults. Over time, studies of more than 5 million young people consistently show that the more assets that young people have, the less likely they are to engage in a wide range of high risk- behaviors and the more likely they are to thrive.  Of the 40 assets, multiple reference  the importance of having
positive adult relationships, whether they are family or non-family members! While the participants were getting ready, we had each them write down that person on a little chalk board and took a photo of them to share! We hope you enjoy (Thank you Tori Williams for the awesome photos)!

MYC After School Program
 End of the Year Party!

To celebrate the spectacular end to the 2019 after-school program, the Youth Center hosted an End of the Year Party on the last day of school, with 80 members in attendance! The event included an inflatable water slide, photo booth, jumpy, snacks, music, and the MYC Paul F. Seaver Scholarship presentation!

We would like to thank Debbie Seaver who came and presented Reagan McGrath with the 2019 MYC Paul F. Seaver Scholarship. Thank you to our Board members who attended the presentation as well! We would like to also thank all of  the volunteers who came out  to spend the afternoon with  us:
Kim Wach, Darlene and John Dulude, Barbara Brashier and Victoria Chimeno.

Finally, thank you to all of our wonderful after school program staff for a great year! Without the help of our dedicated staff and volunteers these special events would not be possible. We are so appreciative and are looking forward to working with you again in the new school year!
 MYC After School Program
2018-2019 Recap!

We would like to thank all the families and volunteers who helped make our 2018-2019 After School Program such a success! We had over 680 registered After School members this year alone and we were able to offer over 35 different programs with help from our volunteers, staff and community partners! Some programs included boxing, fishing, sign language, soccer, nutrition, homework help and a month long March Madness basketball tourney, just to name a few!

The MYC works together with other community organizations to provide resources and opportunities for youth to make healthy decisions. The MYC works to provide local youth with the necessary activities and events that help them develop physically, mentally, socially and emotionally through their adolescent years. By providing Milford youth with these types of programs and a safe environment during the after-school hours and during our monthly events, we hope to address adolescent risk factors as well as promoting the partnership among community members to ensure a comprehensive vision and plan for the health of the youth in the town of Milford.

For this reason, we would like to thank our over 90 after school volunteers for this year, hundreds more through our events, as well as all of our community partners! For example, we couldn't run many of our fitness programs without the support of the Milford Regional Medical Center! The Milford Regional Medical Center funds the instructors for our programs, like POUND, Cardio Dance Jam and Fit Camp! We also served over 900 nutritional snacks, which is provided to members who participate in any of our physical fitness and/or nutritional programs.

The Center also is able to offer a free snack and dinner to all after school members, due to the collaboration of CACFP, Hockomock Area  YMCA, Milford Area Humanitarian Coalition and  the Milford School Food  Nutrition Services department!  Due to this
partnership, we have served  over 8,000 dinners and  snacks during this year's After-School program!

Without all of our community support we would not have achieved this! We are so excited for our After-school program to grow with new volunteers and programs and can't wait to see what new and returning programs we offer next school year!
MYC Youth Council (MYCYC) Yearly Recap!

It's a wrap! On June 5th, the final Youth Council meeting for the school year was held. From the Veteran's Day Parade to now, the group certainly made strides and Marissa, our  Social Capital Inc. AmeriCorps member and the MYC staff cannot possibly thank the kids enough everything they've done this year!

The leadership group partook in numerous community events, as well as helping with out here at the MYC!  Some events included the Milford Veteran's Day Parade, decorating a tree for the Milford Gala of Trees, participating in the Santa Parade,  decorating gifts to give our  volunteers at the MYC Holiday  Party,  decorating our Community   Outreach Board,  learning how to properly use filming  equipment with Liz Harkins from Milford TV, learning about banking and finance  with Bill Stark from  Commerce Bank, participating in the Milford  Family Fun and Disability  Awareness Fair,
participating in Milford Beautification Day, the Milford Family Bridges Night at Woodland Elementary School, assembling lawn games for our MYC Summer Camp, attending District Attorney Joseph D. Early's Student Wellness Conference and creating our very own MYC Youth Council Time Capsule, which will be opened in 2034! Here's to a great year full of community service, outreach, and volunteerism; and may there be many more! We hope to see everyone back next September and to have new members join!
Our SCI AmeriCorps Member Graduated!

On June 20th, MYC staff accompanied Marissa at her AmeriCorps graduation at Codman Square Health Center in Dorchester!
Marissa is almost done with her 1,700 hours of service for the Youth Center. We are so proud of her accomplishments over the year with running the Youth Leadership Council and the many other tasks she has completed for the Center!

Marissa will be continuing on with us for Summer Camp but then will start college in the Fall! We wish her good luck and we are excited to have two new AmeriCorps members in the Fall. If you know someone
who maybe interested in these positions, click here

After the graduation, MYC staff joined other volunteers at Cradle to Crayons.  Cradles  for Crayons provides children from birth through age 12, living in homeless or low-income situations, with the essential items they need to thrive - at home, at school and at play. They supply these items free of charge by engaging and connecting communities. Thank you to all those who donated to our MYC collection over the last couple weeks!
Join the MYC as an SCI AmeriCorps Member!
2 Positions are Open!

The MYC is looking for two Social Capital Inc. AmeriCorps members, for two positions starting in September!  The SCI AmeriCorps program supports youth success by increasing volunteerism and providing leadership training and community service opportunities for youth. The goal of the SCI AmeriCorps program is to connect youth with relationships, experiences and resources they need to succeed. Members implement volunteer outreach and capacity building activities that increase volunteer participation, and provide leadership training and community service opportunities for youth.

When you join AmeriCorps, you use your energy, ideals, and talents to help others. Plus, you'll earn money for education, learn to be a leader, and gain real job skills. SCI AmeriCorps members aim to build social capital in their communities through civic engagement opportunities, while gaining valuable experience in the process!

SCI AmeriCorps members are placed into one of two teams, Volunteer Outreach Coordinators and Youth Leadership Coordinators. We are currently filling two positions at the Milford Youth Center that will serve 1700 hours from September 2019 to June 2020.

If you are interested, please review the position descriptions here:
To apply, please send a cover letter and resume to the program manager here. For more information about Social Capital Inc. visit  here.
 MYC Building and Staff Updates!

The Youth Center has been keeping very busy over the transition from our After School to Summer Camp Program!

In terms of the building, we took advantage of this time to get our beautiful gymnasium floor refinished. This day long process of sanding and polishing will help maintain our gym floor but there is no use for at-least 5 days. Re-finishing your athletic hardwood floor on an annual basis is critical to the overall maintenance of the floor. Not only will an annual "screen and re-coat" remove topical marks and scuffs from your floor's finish, but refinishing your floor will provide added protection for your hardwood flooring and paint. Thank you New England Sports Floors for doing a great job! The Center has also been meeting with the Town Engineer and Davey Engineering to prepare the plans to have AC installed in the head-house, thanks to a Town Meeting allocation!

We also were able to start construction on our dance and movie room! We are so excited to get this project up and running and to work with E5 Builders LLC and mjh Architects. Thank you to the Greater Milford Community Health Network for this grant to allow it all to happen. We are also so appreciative of the other community support to come, including Consigli Construction Co., Inc., Benjamin Moore and Lumber Liquidators. Click here for Milford Daily News Article. Finally, the entire staff and some community service volunteers helped organize the building for summer camp and worked on a building wide cleaning and organizing/creating an inventory of supplies!

In terms of administrative work, staff participated in numerous trainings and meetings, as we always are trying to grow as a staff and program within the community!

In preparation for Summer Camp, we conducted our summer camp counselor meeting and training with our 22 staff. We would like to thank the Benefits and HR departments for joining us, Ron Auger for conducing two days of CPR and first aid lessons and Milford TV for filming. MYC staff also attended a Y.O.U., Inc. "Systems of Care" meeting to share about our summer camp info for families in the area. We also learned of some great resources to share with our families for fun summer ideas to keep kids busy and learning.

Staff also attended a grant training, conducted by the Foundation for MetroWest in Natick. It was a great opportunity for MYC staff to attend and improve our grant writing. We also gave a tour to the Foundation to learn more about the Youth Center and to hopefully partake in their future grant cycle.

In addition, the Foundation is in the process of completing a community needs assessment project, "Impact MetroWest." Their goal is to use available data and community voice to assess strengths and challenges within our communities to build awareness and drive change. Community data will be available publicly in the Fall of 2019 through a dedicated, interactive website, and will house municipal and/or county-level data coupled with important analysis, interpretation, and trends. The voice of the community will be woven into this project through key stakeholder interviews, focus groups, and a community-wide survey, which will result in a comprehensive and complementary report. They are hoping this will be a useful tool for the Milford community! To participate in this survey, please click here.

They are the women who use their time, talent and enthusiasm to enrich the lives of  others and make a difference  in their neighborhoods, cities and towns.  They are mentors, volunteers  and innovators who do what needs to  be done without
expectations of recognition or gratitude. These women are the glue that keeps a community together and every community is better because of their contribution.
