11-19-19 Meeting

President Lindsey called the meeting to order. Total attendance; 22 members;19 ,other Kiwanis members; Bob Kemper from N. Carolina. Our newest member Brianne Lenhart was our "Sheriff" today and collected good news dollars. We also received application for another new member, Sarah Kuehner!

Please keep Everett Shell in your thoughts, he is at HealthPark and have some surgery on Monday. He welcomes our prayers. 

Todd won the 50/50 today but the ace of hearts wasn't pulled.

December service dates: Bell Ringing Dec. 5th, Breakfast with Santa on Dec 14th and MS Holiday Dec. 17th. Information was sent to all members by email 11/15/19 and the sign up sheet will be at the meetings. 

Oasis Reading/Mentoring (Stewart Ross) weekly at Orangewood  Elementary on Wednesdays  9:30am-10:10am. Please let Stewart know if you can help. Four volunteers are needed each week. Come make a difference! 

MS Support Group(Bill Grant), meets 3rd Thursday of each month at St. Hilary Episcopal Church. 

Literacy Buddy  "Buddies" still welcome. You will be paired with a child (age 4-5). Three times a year you will get a letter from your child and a few notes from his/her teacher describing the type of book they would like to have. You purchase the book and it goes to your child.   Start by signing up:   https://elcofswfl.org/index.php/elc-literacy-buddy-program/     In the section where it says preferred school write in Metro-McGregor Kiwanis Club. You should have received your first letter from your buddy. Books are due to the children; Nov 15th (first book), Jan 17th (second book) and April 17th, (third book). 


                                             
                                                    SLP's (Service Leadership Programs) 
Aktion Club -(Karen Hurst) at LARC. Meets 2nd Tuesday at 8:30am, year-round. They are collecting bottle caps as well. Bring in clean/used T-shirts for Karen to take as they are making more dog toys.

Key Club-(Harris Segel) Collegiate High on FSW campus. 

Builder's Club-(Barbara Hartman, Todd Adams, Ada Trapanese) Cypress Lake Middle. They club recently participated in Community Day at their school and Barbara shared some of their upcoming projects including making cards for the troops. 

K-Kids-(Kim Berghs) Littleton Elementary. Meetings are currently every Wednesday at 2:15pm. 
                                      Today's Program: Military Support Program
  
Our speaker today was Jane Wyllie a volunteer with the Military Support Program, sponsored by Lee Health. This program is dedicated to supporting our local service members who are in the military and their families while deployed. They collaborate with agencies such at the Red Cross, Mission United (United Way), American legion posts, VFW posts, etc. They send care boxes to our local service members deployed overseas, assist local returning veterans and families, support fundraisers for the program, and more. They have launched a veteran visitation program and Cape Coral Hospital with some of the partners named above. Coming up on Dec 14th is Wreaths Across America. Volunteers need to help lay wreaths at one of 5 local cemeteries. "Remember-Honor-Teach." Wreaths will be laid at cemeteries across the county.
