Dear Mill City Commons members and friends,
Election Day has always felt special to me. I love voting at my neighborhood polling place where I can catch up with neighbors, recognize so many of the volunteers, and feel part of something bigger than myself. I love that this year my kids checked in with me ahead of time to make sure I was going to bring them to the polls because they didn't want to miss out on watching how it all works. It's a small tradition that I hope they carry with them.
This summer, as we traveled through Southeast Asia and Oceania, we had lots of conversations about various government structures. Each country we visited had a different system, with its own strengths and challenges. It was a good reminder that there are many ways to govern and not one of them is perfect. I also came home with an even greater appreciation for the privilege of having a voice and a vote.
That appreciation makes me think about the importance of understanding the many perspectives and experiences within our own country. Over the next couple of weeks, we'll have two special opportunities to explore the history and current experiences of Native American communities, thanks to our Native American Programming Workgroup: an interactive Franklin Avenue tour focused on the history of one of the country's largest urban Native communities, and a visit to Red Lake Nation College. Details for both programs can be found below.
I hope we never stop learning, listening, and appreciating the many voices that make up our country. And today, I'm especially grateful for the opportunity to add my own. Happy Election Day!

Mid-Term Election Recap
Tuesday, November 10, 7:00 - 8:30 pm
Grenada Theater, 3022 Hennepin Ave S
This year’s midterm election cycle is behind us. Now what?
The Theater of Public Policy is talking with political reporter Mary Lahammer, media analyst Blois Olson, and political science professor Kathryn Pearson about the outcomes of the midterms in Minnesota. Host Tane Danger will moderate a conversation between the three about what happened in the election, why it happened, and what it means for our day-to-day lives. The conversation will be followed by a slew of totally unscripted, midterms-inspired comedy scenes. Understand the election results in a fun, informative, and nuanced way.
This program builds on the conversation we started with our 2024 Post-Election Panel Discussion two years ago. We’re thrilled that the conversation has now grown into a public program, and we couldn’t be more excited that the Danger Boat Productions' team has invited us to attend. It’s a great opportunity to continue the conversation together in a new format—with analysis, discussion, and plenty of humor.
This program is hosted by Tane Danger, accompanied by live T2P2 improv comedy. Parking is available at Seven Points Parking ramp.
Registration is closed.

It's caffeine and camaraderie for members of MCC and guests! This group meets every other Thursday and is hosted by various members who get the conversation going.
Increasingly we are seeing candidates who are independent of both major parties playing critical roles in our election. At the November 12 Men’s Breakfast we will hear from Tom Horner who ran for governor of Minnesota as an independent in 2010 and was endorsed by the Star Tribune which said he “loves Minnesota; he's a serious student of government and economics, and he feels called to service…Horner seeks to apply the lessons of a lifetime spent working in and around public policy to the restoration of this state's vitality.” Horner is now president of Horner Strategies, LLC, a public relations and public affairs consulting firm, after a career working in public relations and media in Minnesota, including service with Senator Dave Durenberger. He is a frequent contributor to regional and national media on public policy and politics and writes a regular column available on Substack (tomhorner.substack.com). Horner will talk about the midterm elections. Aaron Backman is hosting him.
