Gen Z and Millennials WE'VE GOT YOUR BACK!
|
|
Hello!
For our March newsletter, we wanted to highlight the results of a recent study showing that Millennials and GenZ young adults are savvy consumers when it comes to their health choices.
More than half (53%) of young adults (ages 18-32) would be more willing to choose a doctor of chiropractic (DC) for treatment of neck or back pain instead of a medical doctor, such as a primary care doctor or an orthopedist, according to a recent survey of over 2,000 U.S. adults conducted online by The Harris Poll.
This makes perfect sense! I love this age group and the trend that we are seeing because it is showing that these young patients are asking deeper questions. In the past, there was a trust within the medical field that you would go to your family doctor when having neck pain or back pain and the trusted doctor would prescribe muscle relaxers, pain meds, or even narcotics. The typical mindset has been “Because I trust my doctor and they are like an extension of my family why shouldn't I trust them? Okay, I will take the recommended prescription for relief.”
Now, there is an awakening within the younger generations where they are saying, "I know my body is in pain for a reason". Masking my symptoms with potentially addictive pain medications doesn't seem like a solution. I know there is a cause for my pain; so what is the cause of my pain? Who can I go to that is going to look a little deeper and have conservative solutions?” That’s us. That's Chiropractors! Now, critically thinking young people are coming to us, the experts in spinal biomechanics, with the question, "Can you help me?”
YES, we can! Chiropractors are expertly suited to look at a patient and mechanically assess what is going on. Chiropractors ask, "Are there underlying issues: like postural issues and/or movement issues as the likely underlying cause of their spinal pain? Or are there nutritional deficiencies, muscular weaknesses, or mind-body stress factors that play into a patient's pain?” As the recent Harris Poll shows, millennials are choosing to see Chiropractors verses MDs for their musculoskeletal pain because they astutely understand that there are healthcare provider options and they are researching and choosing the most appropriate practitioner to help guide them. They get it.
|
|
I like this age group because they are looking for more of a coach, more of a friend-type doctor to help them along the way. This is what medical doctors used to be. They used to be a family friend that cared for patients throughout their lifetime. This is not the case anymore and young people are wanting that back.
|
|
|
Patients are turning their back on over-promising and under-delivering mainstream medical care. For example, young people are not trusting the medical model because they see how insurance agencies influence care outcomes by means of insurance denials for appropriate and reasonable testing and treatments. In addition, they see how pharmaceutical companies have too much influence over their care as addictive pain meds have been the common treatment option for musculoskeletal pain; Resulting in the Opioid epidemic. Millennials and Gen Z generations are seeing that their care is not a large motivating factor amongst insurance companies and Big Pharma decision making.
In summary, trust is being gained with wellness practitioners, like Chiropractors and Acupuncturists, who may or may not take insurance which allows them to prioritize patient health without outside influence. I love treating this demographic because they are looking for a friend in their doctor and a coach and a relationship where they can build longevity and trust.
Chiropractors are perfectly suited for exactly that!

Little known FACTS about Chiropractic Care
|
Chiropractic celebrates over 125+ years of care and is practiced in all 50 states and in numerous countries.
Despite its longevity and worldwide adoption, there are still many facts about chiropractic care that people may not know, even when they have been a chiropractic patient before.
Lack of knowledge about chiropractic care may cause some people to miss out on the pain relief, improved mobility, enhanced athletic performance and overall health benefits.
|
|
That is why, in this column, we are sharing a few facts you may not know about chiropractic care and our doctors.
|
|
1.What the letters DC mean?
Many types of doctors have letters after their name: MD, DO, DDS, but Doctors of Chiropractic have a DC to signify their education, training and licensure. In fact, DCs receive the same number of classroom, laboratory and internship hours – 4,200 – as their allopathic (MD) and osteopathic medicine (DO) colleagues.
In addition to operating a general chiropractic practice, InnerMovement DCs specialize in spinal remolding, sports, pediatrics & pregnancy. DCs also stand for natural, drug-free, non-invasive approaches to neuro-musculoskeletal health and wellbeing.
Just like other doctors, DCs must carry medical liability insurance in case of a malpractice lawsuit. A typical DC, however, pays just $2,500 a year in malpractice insurance premiums. Compare that to doctors of internal medicine (MDs) who pay from $8,000 a year in premiums in California to as much as $51,000 a year in Florida. A general surgeon in Florida can pay as much as $205,000 a year in premiums.
DCs’ low annual premium is based on numerous studies proving the safety of chiropractic care indicating a very low risk of harm to the patient.
2.How the body restores itself without drugs?
Instead of masking symptoms through drugs, chiropractic care is focused on accelerating the body’s innate ability to alleviate neuro-musculoskeletal pain on its own and its natural tendency to restore itself.
The most common way that DCs do this is through a non-invasive procedure called spinal manipulation or “chiropractic adjustment.” This is applying a force, to one or more dysfunctional vertebrae of the spine. The procedure requires highly refined skills developed during the doctor’s intensive years of chiropractic education. InnerMovement DC's use hands-on adjustments when necessary & non-force adjustments when indicated.
That is likely why a study in JAMA found that when spinal manipulation was performed by DOs or physical therapists (PTs) -- who do not receive as much training on spinal manipulation as DCs -- it appeared to be ineffective for chronic low back pain. Not so for DCs. This is one of the reasons that 94% of spinal manipulations are provided by doctors of chiropractic. Since DCs deliver more adjustments than any other type of healthcare practitioner, they are the experts most commonly recommended to provide adjustments.
Chiropractors guide patients through 3 phases of care:
- Acute care: The Goal of this phase is pain relief. Patients can expect 90-100% relief within 3-5 visits. Range of motion will increase and Posture will improve.
-
Recovery care: With pain diminished, the Goal of this phase is to achieve lasting stability in the spine and surrounding muscles so the pain does not re-occur.
- Wellness care: With pain gone & stability reached, the Goal of this phase is to maintain all the hard work invested so the spine remains resilient to the daily stresses of life. 1 to 2 spinal checkups/month is recommended for prevention and overall spinal Wellness.

Survey Shows Young Adults More Willing to Choose Chiropractic Care😊
SAN JOSE, Calif., Nov. 16, 2021 /PRNewswire/ -- More than half (53%) of young adults (ages 18-32) would be more willing to choose a doctor of chiropractic (DC) for treatment of neck or back pain instead of a medical doctor, such as a primary care doctor or an orthopedist, according to a recent survey of over 2,000 U.S. adults conducted online by The Harris Poll and commissioned by the Foundation for Chiropractic Progress (F4CP), a nonprofit dedicated to informing and educating the general public about the value of chiropractic care.
Choosing chiropractic care over a medical doctor for neck and back pain varied among age groups, employment, and region according to results from the F4CP/Harris Poll survey.
Key Findings
-
By generation: as much as 54% of Gen Z (ages 18-24) and 52% of younger Millennials (ages 25-32) answered "doctor of chiropractic" to the question: If you were experiencing neck or back pain, would you be more willing to see a doctor of chiropractic (DC) or a medical doctor (e.g., primary care physician or orthopedist) for treatment?, compared to just 35% of Baby Boomers (ages 57-75).
- By employment status: Nearly half (48%) of employed Americans would be willing to seek care from a DC compared to only 39% of those who are not employed.
- By region: 49% of adults residing in the West would be more willing to choose a DC over a medical doctor for treatment of neck or back pain compared to 40% of adults residing in the Northeast.
"After more than two decades of the nation's opioid crisis, it is not surprising that younger Americans would choose effective, drug-free and non-invasive chiropractic care to manage neck and back pain and avoid risky and costly surgical approaches," said Sherry McAllister, DC, president of F4CP. "Not only is chiropractic care safer, but research has shown time and again that patients of all ages who visit a DC have fewer opioid prescriptions and less usage."
These studies include a 2020 analysis of health insurance claims that found patients with spinal pain who visited a DC and another primary care doctor had half the risk of filling an opioid prescription than those who did not receive chiropractic care. The risk reduction was even greater if the patient saw the DC within 30 days of first experiencing spinal pain.
Pain starts young
The F4CP/Harris Poll survey findings align with 2017 survey results from the Pew Research Center which showed that 53% of American adults ages 18 to 49 access non-traditional care, such as chiropractic, exclusively or in addition to pharmacologic approaches to care, which was a higher acceptance rate than older Americans.
It also aligns with findings from a 2020 F4CP study of Gen Z's approaches to chronic pain management which found that the majority of Americans ages 18 to 24 reported they first experienced chronic neck, shoulder or back pain when they were younger than 16. More than 63% of survey respondents reported being "somewhat" or "very" interested in chiropractic care while 17% said they had already received such care.
"We are very encouraged to see our youth seeking natural, drug-free care first," said Dr. McAllister. "Hopefully, the awareness of the effective, long-term pain relief and mobility benefits of chiropractic care will continue throughout their life not only to relieve neck and back pain, but also to focus on holistic wellness." read more
