MILLENNIUM'S QUARTERLY NEWS
Customer "Check-In" Reports are Back!
We heard great feedback from April's “Customer Check-In Package” and we are happy to deliver the next one just in time for America Recycles Day (November 15th).

You should be receiving your package sometime next week (one per customer). These packages are meant to help us check-in on how you’re doing, keep you informed, and give you a chance to provide us with feedback. We sincerely appreciate the opportunity to serve you!
City of Sioux Falls: Sustainability
Multiple sustainability steering committee meetings have been held by the City of Sioux Falls and we are hopeful to see some of the ideas put into action.

A written plan is currently being drafted based on community input and you are encouraged to share your comments with them through November 4th via [email protected] or online at siouxfalls.org/sustainability.

We will continue working with them on recycling education and enforcement improvements. The draft is slated to be ready for committee review in December to be posted for a public comment period in early 2022, with the goal of bringing the plan to City Council for adoption in spring of next year. We will continue to update you as we have more information.
What is Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR)?
Recycling has always been framed as the consumer’s responsibility; however, we throw out a lot of trash because we are sold and have access to a lot of trash.

A big step towards solving our waste crisis is the “circular economy”, where manufacturers take responsibility and design materials for reuse rather than disposal. Product manufacturers have direct influence on the recyclability of the packaging, however, recycling programs are usually managed and financed at the local level.

Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) shifts responsibility from the local level back to producers. This includes strategies such as:
  • Organizing and funding take-back and recycling programs for products and packaging.
  • Designing products that are easier to reuse, repair, and recycle.

EPR policies are gaining momentum across the United States. Several states already have existing EPR programs for hard-to-dispose of items from industries including pharmaceuticals, paint, and batteries. Now, states are introducing policies for packaging in general, including Maine and Oregon. With the right policies in place, recycling has the potential to be streamlined across the country.
