DON'T DELAY- MENTOR GIRLS IN STEM SKILLS
Yinka Robinson of STEMconnector Introduces MWM Founding Partners Karen Peterson of NGCP, Mary Fernandez of Mentornet, Stephanie Cuskley of NPower and Jennifer Sirangelo of The National 4-H Council
Million Women Mentors, launched as an initiative of STEMconnector, will support the engagement of one million women (and men) in STEM to serve as mentors by 2018.  Our shared vision with 44 lead partners* is to serve at least one million girls and young women throughout the high school to work age continuum to increase the interest and confidence to persist and succeed in STEM programs and careers.

If you haven't already, you can pledge-to-mentor HERE or at www.millionwomenmentors.org as a corporation, organization or individual.

Young girls and women are less likely than their male counterparts to work in STEM fields. In fact, just 24 percent of women work in STEM fields. The good news is that women in STEM careers earn 92 cents for every dollar male-STEM counterparts earn versus 75 cents in other fields. What's more, 80 percent of the fastest growing occupations in the United States depend on mastery of mathematics and scientific knowledge and skills.

Under the pledge you have the option to sign on as a corporation with a designated point person, Individual or organization that will bring mentors to the table with a minimum requirement of 20 hours a year. Companies and organizations choose how they want to mentor through five suggested pathways to build their program or leverage what they are doing already. These pathways are delineated in the pledge section and include online, face to face, internships, sponsorship of a young woman and more. Many of our 44 National partners who serve combined over 18 million girls are in need of mentors.

"For Accenture, the combination of STEM and women is a natural fit," said Jorge Benitez, Accenture's Chief Executive of the United States and senior managing director of North America. "Technology-led innovation is at the heart of our business, and our women are key to our ability to deliver high performance to our clients. Pairing girls and young women with successful role models is a key step to encouraging them to bring their intelligence, talent and ability to STEM careers, and we are pleased to be part of this important initiative."

"It's incongruent that in 2013 women accounted for 57 percent of bachelor's degrees awarded in the U.S., but STEM accounted for less than 10 percent of all degrees,"
said Michael Norris, Chief Operating Officer & Market President, Sodexo North America.
"Given that by 2020, 81 percent of new workforce entrants will be women or minorities, at Sodexo we hear a call to action today to mentor and prepare girls and young women for unbridled success in tomorrow's demanding global marketplace, and are excited to support this critical STEM careers imperative."

Partners NEWS & Resources

After a successful launch on January 8th, we've hit the ground running with National Mentoring Month developed by partner MENTOR.  On January 6th, the Manufacturing Institute announced its partnership with MWM along with its 2014 STEP Award Honorees.  Followed by efforts from eWomen Netowrk and Girl Scouts of the USA (GUSA) which included a mentor/mentee luncheon, and a fabulous piece written by CEO of GUSA Anna Maria Chavez featured in the Huffington Post!

The National Alliance of Partnerships in Equity (NAPE), Girlstart, NEPRIS, and founding partner the National Girls Collaborative Project hosted webinars discussing the importance of building the STEM pipeline, the role trust plays within the mentor/mentee relationship, connecting classrooms with the real world of STEM,  and the importance of STEM role models for girls. And special thanks to Diversity Woman Magazine and the Business Professional Women's Foundation for starting this week off strong!

Stay tuned for the next update.

"As a proud founding partner of MWM, nothing is more important than mentoring and supporting girls and women into STEM careers, especially in the underserved communities. We are thrilled to work in more than 1,400 communities with more than eight million girls," said Karen Peterson, President and CEO of National Girls Collaborative Project (NGCP

The MWM Web Portal- A Resource for Our Country!
TCS's Balaji Ganapathy and STEMconnector's Julie Kantor Launch the MWM website
Web Portal Goes Live!

As Brandon Busteed of Gallup Says, "Mentor Duty Should Be the New Jury Duty!"

The  website portal will be developed in phases with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS). The first phase launched January 8, 2014 launched above by Balaji Ganapathy of TCS, and STEMconnector's Julie Kantor includes a nationwide call to action to capture and pledge commitments from individuals, organizations and companies that have an interest in mentoring. In the second and third phases, the website will be enhanced with matching capabilities to pair corporation (mentors) with worthy non-profits and educational institutions serving girls in STEM fields. Additionally, the site will recognize those with model mentoring programs, research, Townhalls, and learning resources.

"STEM careers offer women and girls the opportunity to engage in some of the most exciting realms of innovation. TCS believes we collectively need an all hands on deck approach, clearing hurdles as women navigate careers in STEM, and paving the way towards realizing greater equality and economic success," said Surya Kant, Tata Consultancy Services' President for North America, UK & Europe.
