Known and Loved

This week's devotion is authored by Pastor Lawton Thompson

Is there someone in your life who knows you completely? It may be your spouse, a close friend you have known since childhood, or maybe someone else. This is likely the person you can pick up a conversation with after a year, as if you hadn’t missed a day. Also, likely a person you long to spend more time with than you presently do. Jessica and I know each other like that, and we each have childhood friends that fit the bill.

It is a gift to have someone in your life who knows you completely — with your imperfections — and still loves you. The thing is, no matter how completely they know you, it will not be perfect knowledge. You are not perfect, and neither are they. So even at their best, their complete knowledge is incomplete.

But there is One who does know you completely. Who knows each and every one of your thoughts, words, and deeds and still loves you. He desires personal conversation with you. To hear the things that you are thankful for and also the things that are a challenge. God is personally involved in our lives and desires that communication. I know, at times, He can seem silent. But in those moments, we trust in Him. Trust that He hears us and is working in all things on our behalf. When I find myself frustrated at His seeming silence, I remember Isaiah 55:8, “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways, declares the LORD.” He is the Creator; we are His creatures.

As we spend time in His word and in prayer, we trust more and more that His silence doesn’t equal inaction. Instead, it equals fatherly wisdom on our behalf in all things. Take a little time each day for a conversation with your Heavenly Father, who knows you completely, loves you, and has redeemed you.

In Holy Conversation

LSB Hymn 772 • Stanza 3

As holy conversation,

    In silence or by word,

In ev’ry situation

    Through Jesus, we are heard.

So let us pray securely,

    Expressing hopes and fears

With confidence that surely

    Our Father ever hears.
