"Since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith" (Heb. 12:1–2a).
Yesterday, we gathered to celebrate All Saints' Day, a time of remembrance and rejoicing. In the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod, this day is both a remembrance of the faithful departed and a celebration of the hope of resurrection in Christ. We give thanks for those who have gone before us in faith — family members, friends, and all who have trusted in Jesus as their Savior. Though we grieve their absence, we rejoice that they now rest from their labors and live in the presence of Christ, awaiting the resurrection of the body and life everlasting.
At St. Paul's Lutheran Church and School, we have been blessed by 176 years of faithful saints who have walked before us. Pastors, teachers, parents, and congregation members — men and women who built, served, prayed, and gave so that Christ's Gospel would continue to be proclaimed in this place. Their faithfulness reminds us that the ministry we enjoy today is not our own achievement but the fruit of God's grace working through generations of His people.
As we remember those who have passed the faith to us, we also give thanks for those in our own families who began that journey — those who carried us to the baptismal font, who prayed with us, taught us God's Word, and modeled what it means to follow Jesus. Their love and witness have shaped our faith and pointed us toward the One who is our source of life and hope: Christ alone.
Today, we are called to continue the legacy of faith. The next generation is watching and learning from us. Our words, prayers, generosity, and example can draw others closer to Jesus. Let us remember that we, too, are "saints" — holy ones set apart by God's grace. May our lives give witness to our faithful God, who has sustained this congregation for nearly two centuries. May we look forward with joy to that great reunion of all the saints in Christ's eternal kingdom.
