Just the other day, dark and gray clouds rolled in, thunder clapped, and lightning filled the sky. Rains fell heavily for short periods, then the sunshine peeked out again. Multiple birds chirped, and robins bounced about gathering worms. This happened repeatedly throughout the afternoon and evening, culminating with a gorgeous sunset and double rainbow visible in the eastern sky! What a reminder of the challenges and blessings that make up our days.
In this earthly life we literally and figuratively experience unexpected storms as well as warm, sunshine-filled times. The fear, doubt, and concern that may come within these storms might cause us to feel distant and unsupported by the Almighty. The experiences of sunshine and warmth are a welcome reminder of His unconditional love, devotion, and care for each of us as His cherished children. There are seasons of life when we may feel strongly supported and anchored in our walk with Him, yet other circumstances that give us a sense of drifting away in our relationship to Him.
Despite our feelings, “Jesus Christ never changes,” for He is “the same yesterday, today, and forever,” as we are assured in Hebrews 13:8. He truly is The Solid Rock on which we stand, whether life’s “weather” is unwelcome or welcome.
When we are anchored in Christ, we are transformed, bit by bit, into the people that He’s called us to be. In daily surrender to Him, we are better able to live effectively for and through the Lord. Galatians 2:20 reminds us, "I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me." Our identity is in Christ as individuals and as a church community. Therefore, we are truly able to see God’s image in others and to effectively "grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity" (2 Peter 3:18).
It is not a quick or easy process. The key is to trust Him fully as our foundation, our stability, and our strength. This allows the Holy Spirit to be in control. So whether the “weather” is cloudy or sunny, the presence of our saving Lord is constant. The steadfast, immovable Almighty Triune God is there, upholding us, loving us, and directing us steadfastly within every season. Hallelujah!
