You Belong to Jesus

This week’s devotion is authored by Pastor Lawton Thompson

Have you ever felt helpless? Are you feeling overwhelmed? Are there things on the calendar or to-do list that give you anxiety? I have good news for you. In the throes of the storms of life, you belong to Jesus. He knew you before you were born. As the Psalmist says, “You knit me together in my mother’s womb.” He calls you His own. Isaiah 43:1 declares, “I have called you by name, you are mine.” He is with you. In Matthew 28:20, Jesus proclaims, “And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

You belong to the God who created all things and promised a Savior. A Savior who, because we could not pay the price of our salvation, took our place. His blood was shed on the cross for His people. In Baptism, as the water poured over your head, He applied the Gospel to you. You were marked as one redeemed by Him. You were given a new name: Christian. In those waters your old self was drowned, and up from them came the new self. You now live as God’s forgiven child. As the Lord invites you to His Supper, He comes to you offering the forgiveness of sins and the strengthening of your faith. We have a God who is not far off — but near.

In the feelings of helplessness, anxiety, and being overwhelmed, turn to Him. Be reminded that the God of all things took on flesh and went to the cross for you. He said that you are worth dying for. It doesn’t mean that the hard things of life simply go away; it means that in the storm, you know who you are. You belong to Jesus. He clings tightly to you and will never let you go.

O God, Our Help in Ages Past

LSB Hymn 733, Stanzas 1 and 2

O God, our help in ages past,

Our hope for years to come,

Our shelter from the stormy blast,

And our eternal home:

Under the shadow of Thy throne

Thy saints have dwelt secure;

Sufficient is Thine arm alone,

And our defense is sure.
