Rejoice in the Measure of Our Spiritual Life

“Our spiritual life cannot be measured by success as the world measures it, but only by what God pours through us and we cannot measure that at all.” • Oswald Chambers

“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and

where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” • Matthew 6:19-21

Have you ever considered this verse and wondered what Jesus means by treasures in heaven? We all know that we can’t take our "stuff" with us, so what’s really a "treasure in heaven"? It sounds remarkable, so how do we get it? Do I have any right now?

If you’re anything like the rest of us, you’re wondering how we start measuring what we’ve stored up so far. And then the realization sets in that you’re quickly creating a whole new idol to take God’s place in your hearts (1 John 5:21). Thankfully, this sort of "riches" is of the Spirit and not of the flesh. Therefore, our limited minds cannot find a way to measure it.

Does that mean it can’t bring us joy? By no means! I am reminded of the time described by Luke when Jesus uses the celebration of the return of the 72 to teach a lesson on what’s important. "Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven." In other words, the names are the source of our joy. It is not what we gain but how we are used to save others that counts.

These names are our treasure. The multitude of them written in the book of life are the measure of our spiritual life (Revelation 3:5). And there’s no better investment this side of heaven.

So, does this pledge to invest in our school and church ministries have a positive return on the names written in heaven? Does this commitment increase your treasure? Absolutely.

About Mindful Monday Devotions

As we have officially launched our Tell the Wonders He Has Done ministry expansion campaign, we would like the congregation to join together by taking a moment each Monday to be centered in God's Word. This will not only be a time to consider financial commitments, but also an opportunity to stretch spiritually. Our intent is for these devotions to support that purpose. We look forward to sharing our thoughts and God's Word with you weekly.

Giving our best to His glory,

James and Becky Blake
