Whoa! That’s not exactly what we want to hear on a Monday — "wretched and naked." Shouldn’t the devotion before our commitment celebration fill us with loving affirmation, using words like abundant and cheerful? Perhaps, but these harsh words were given to the Church in Laodicea out of just that, love. Jesus goes on to say, “Those whom I love, I reprove and discipline” (Revelation 3:19). Remember that this was a wealthy Church filled with compromise, complacency, and self-reliance, headed down a road that leads to death. If the discipline feels sharp, it’s probably because the message is as much for us as it was for them. Author and Pastor Randy Alcorn used words to describe a test we all face: “In the midst of prosperity, the challenge for believers is to handle wealth in such a way that it acts as a blessing, not a curse.”
What could be more devoted and faithful than speaking the truth with love? The answer is dying on a cross. So let us be mindful that chapter 3 of Revelation closes with Jesus proclaiming, “He who has an ear, let him hear what the spirit says to the churches” (Revelation 3:22).
Thus, we are ready for the beginning of a spiritual season. Let the next five years be a holy opportunity to get closer to God and His Son, and to open the door where He is knocking, and eat with Him (Revelation 3:20). God knows the outcome of this ministry expansion. He knows that it will take excitement and enthusiasm in the hearts of us all. He also knows the sacrifice it’s going to take to get from a noble idea to a blessed reality.
Please join us in prayer for the extraction of our lukewarm spirit. Replace it, O’ God, with a hot fire that will refine our gold and shine light on our true riches. Jesus, let us keep the door open to You in our lives. We have heard You say, “Surely I am coming soon.” In our Savior’s name, Amen!
