At we all start off this new year together and I reflect on the past few months, I am so incredibly humbled by the kindness and generosity in all our communities. A growing number of schools, foundations, individuals, and volunteers have offered their support to help us bring our excellent and often life-changing programs to school students and their families. Thank you for your generosity of spirit, and thank you for caring about the mental and emotional well-being of our young people. Together, we truly are changing lives.
Happy New Year!

Phillies Charities honors Minding Your Mind
|
In recognition of our work in the Philadelphia community and our ongoing partnership with the Phillies in producing Strike Out the Stigma events, Minding Your Mind received a $25,000 grant from Phillies Charities, Inc. The letter announcing the grant stated, "During the 2022 baseball season, Phillies fan, player, and employee support of fundraisers contributed largely to a grant fund, which enabled grants to dozens of nonprofit organizations. We hope this donation makes a difference in the meaningful work you are already doing for our community."
"We are proud to be a part of what the Phillies have accomplished with community outreach involving conversations around mental health and wellness," says Trish Larsen, executive director for Minding Your Mind. "Strike Out the Stigma is a first-of-its-kind initiative by a Philadelphia professional sports team, and we look forward to being involved in this important community program for years to come."

 |
Minding Your Mind is excited to partner with the BRAVE program of Flagler Health in Florida. "Our organizations share a common goal of removing the stigma around mental health and encouraging help-seeking behavior," shares Guy Iacono, MYM's Florida regional director. "BRAVE does a fantastic job of connecting individuals and families with local support, so our partnership seemed truly natural. We look forward to collaborating with BRAVE and continuing to grow in Florida." The BRAVE program seeks to break down the stigma associated with seeking assistance for mental health. The first program of this partnership is the BRAVE Summit 2023 for high school students across Florida. Learn more & register

Student Mental Health Crisis
"Not long after the pandemic started, researchers began to document declines in child and adolescent mental health...Hospital emergency room visits spiked for suspected suicide attempts among girls ages 12 to 17, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. From February to March 2021, the number jumped by 51 percent compared with the same period during 2019. For boys, the increase was 4 percent. Early research from MIT suggested the suicide rate for people aged 10 to 19 increased in 2020, compared with before the pandemic. In other research, the CDC found nearly 45 percent of high school students were so persistently sad or hopeless in 2021 they were unable to engage in regular activities. Almost 1 in 5 seriously considered suicide...A substantially larger percentage of gay, lesbian, bisexual, other and questioning students reported a suicide attempt." Read the full article
