Music from the Earth

The fifth poster in our Mining Makes It Happen poster series is now available. Music from the Earth explores the use of minerals, metals and elements in the creation of musical instruments, performances and audio engineering. The poster features a range of instruments, including percussion, brass, woodwinds and strings, as well as electronic devices and the Earth materials that are used in their manufacture. Volunteer Training Workshop

Are you interested in sharing your knowledge of the minerals industry with youth in classrooms or your community?
Do you have a desire to raise public awareness of the significance of mining in daily life?
On March 3, 2019, Mining Matters will host a workshop to train those who wish to volunteer with Mining Matters in a classroom or other public setting. The workshop will take place during the PDAC Convention and will train participants to implement a Volunteer Presentation Kit, complete with hands-on activities that can be delivered to a group. Participants will learn key messages, become familiarized with the components of the Kit and learn how to deliver its contents. If you are looking for ways to inspire the next generation of geoscientists, this is the perfect opportunity for you.

Mining Rocks in Northern Canada
|
Between September and December, Mining Matters delivered 20 Mining Rocks programs and participated in geoscience, mining and environmental forums in the Northwest Territories, Nunavik, Nunavut and Yukon.
The Mining Rocks Earth Science program teaches students about the importance of Canada's mineral resources, Earth science, environmental science, the mining cycle and careers in the minerals industry. In both indoor and outdoor settings, students learn foundational concepts through fun and engaging hands-on activities, such as Cookie Mining, Scientific Testing of Minerals, matching everyday items to the mineral from which it is made, engineer design challenges to build a headframe out of straws and create a water filtration process, and art activities that allow students to create with different types of metal and complete a soapstone carving. Careers and the importance of safety are emphasized throughout the programs through the involvement of career role models.

Women in Rocks

The "Women in Rocks" Conference and Awareness Day took place on Saturday, November 10, 2018. The event was hosted by the Earth Resources Technician Co-op Program and the School of Environmental and Natural Resource Sciences at Fleming College in an effort raise awareness of the career and educational opportunities available to women in Earth resources. The conference showcased the variety of roles and career opportunities for women who are underrepresented in mining and mineral exploration, geotechnical engineering, environmental geology, drilling, blasting and other Earth resource-related fields.
The day opened with a career panel that included four speakers who represented different professional applications in Earth resources, followed by a panel discussion with the audience and culminated with an afternoon tour of the College's newly renovated GeoCentre, opened earlier this academic year, and gold panning. More than 75 students, members of the Fleming College community and the public participated in the event. Lesley Hymers, Manager of Education and Outreach Programs was invited to serve as one of the career panel speakers. We look forward to future collaborations.

Pre-Service Teachers' Mineral Resources and Mining Education Tour

In mid-November, the Canadian Ecology Centre and Mining Matters hosted a tour for 18 enthusiastic student teachers from the Schulich School of Education at Nipissing University. This was the first tour held for an audience of teachers in training, as part of a new delivery model that includes incorporating tours into the University's professional development programs.
The tour combined elements from both the Foundations and Mine Life Cycle Tours, including a comprehensive Earth science and mineral resources hands-on learning workshop that included the fundamentals of mineral properties and identification, rock types, drill core and ore, products and an introduction to mining.
Richard Cook, Specialist Environmental Scientist with Knights Piesold, spoke to the candidates, sharing his vast mining industry professional experience. Tour participants visited Glencore's Nickel Rim South Mine where they explored the underground operation and the career paths available in the minerals industry. The tour culminated with a site visit to the Jane Goodall Reclamation Trail to discuss the theory and practice involved in the regreening of Sudbury.
