SPRING BREAK VIRTUAL EARTH
SCIENCE CAMP: APRIL 12-16
Have your kids explore the work of geologists, engineers and environmental scientists at our Spring Break Virtual Earth Science Camp!

Campers will explore Earth science concepts, discover the properties of minerals and metals, and participate in scavenger hunts to make the connection between mineral resources and the things they use every day.
WHERE CHALLENGE MINI
Our annual WHERE Challenge may be closed, but you can still enter our WHERE Challenge Mini contest.

Much like the WHERE Challenge, the mini version is designed to inspire youth to discover the non-renewable resources that are used to make the items we use every day. The monthly contest will run until June 2021.
WHERE Challenge judges needed! If you would like to volunteer to join our panel of judges for the 2020-2021 WHERE Challenge contest, register here.
MINING MATTERS ONLINE AUCTION
During the 2021 PDAC Convention, Mining Matters hosted an online auction, which raised over $7,500 for mineral resources education. A highlight was the collection of core donated by Barrick Gold Corporation which went for $1,750.

The winning bidder, Laurie Curtis, is donating the collection to the University of Toronto, Department of Earth Sciences.
"Other than field trips, one of the best learning tools we can offer geoscience students is drill core, which in itself is a rarity in most teaching collections. The opportunity to support Mining Matters by bidding on a...set of two of Barrick Gold’s recent discoveries in Nevada was too good to give up, especially since it will be donated to Geoscience at U of T where I arrived as a student 50 years ago," said Curtis.

Thanks to all those who participated and a special thanks to Barrick Gold for this most generous donation and to the PDAC for their continuous support.
GEMS KITS AND VIRTUAL WORKSHOPS
We continue to ship out GEMS (Geology, Engineering, Mining, Sustainability) kits filled with hands-on activities to our Indigenous community partners.

We would like to thank Relay Education for contributing a valuable activity about wind turbines to our kits.
In addition to sending kits, Mining Matters has now delivered more than 70 virtual workshops since we shifted to online programs. We recently teamed up with Superior Science Girls Club to facilitate activities about the rock cycle and lead them in an amethyst jewellery making craft. Request a workshop today!
UPCOMING EVENTS:
  • April 8: Mining Matters President, Patricia Dillon, will be presenting to Women in Mining Central America during their inaugural event.
  • May 8: Join us at Science Rendezvous and be sure to look out for our activity that will be featured on their vlog.
  • May 19-21: Visit our virtual booth at the Canada-Wide Science Fair STEM Expo.

BE THE SPARK
We collaborated with Toronto jeweller, Delane, to design a unique pendant for Mining Matters. The piece represents our mission to spark curiosity about Earth sciences in youth and $15 from every necklace sold will be donated back to Mining Matters.
