HR 2925 Mining Regulatory Clarity Act

Contact Up-Date

In our last newsletter, we shared that the HR 2925 Mining Regulatory Clarity Act was passed by the U.S. House of Representatives and encouraged our members to contact their legislatures voicing opposition.

Unfortunately, the contact information we shared was incorrect. To voice your opposition, contact Senators Mark Kelly and Kirsten Sinema.

We also encourage you to contact Congressman Juan Ciscomani, who voted in support of the Bill, helping to move it forward, and share your disappointment in his bad judgement.

Please remember, HR2925 was created with the explicit goal of erasing the new legal precedent set by the 2022 Rosemont Decision. If passed, this bill will among other things, allow mining companies to dig pits and roads, and install mining equipment and infrastructure on public lands before proving that any critical minerals exist at those proposed sites. This is unacceptable.

Governor Hobbs Won't Intercede on Location of New Highway

Near Tucson

Gov. Katie Hobbs won’t use her power to direct the state Department of Transportation to scrap a proposal that could run a new interstate highway up the middle of our state, along Tucson Mountain Park and through a special corridor set up to ensure wildlife migration. Despite having alternative options that would not open the door to the destruction of pristine and natural migration areas, she chooses not to oppose it. For the moment, that leaves in place the decisions about building the road that had been blessed by her predecessor, Doug Ducey.

Local environmental groups such as The Coalition for Sonoran Desert Protection, the Center for Biological Diversity, the Friends of Ironwood Forest, and the Tucson Audubon Society have filed suit against the project, contending that the Federal Highway Administration, which is handling the project for ADOT, ignored better alternatives to the path through the Avra Valley.

This is not a done deal by any means. You can help. Contact the Govenor to voice your opposition and ask her to halt this unnecessary project.

The Coalition for Sonoran Desert Protection has more information and a list of talking points as well as contact information for other elected officials to aid in your correspondence.

We will keep you posted!

Dedicated to Preserving

&

Improving Our Environment

Tucson Clean & Beautiful (TCB) is a non-profit environmental advocacy and action organization founded in 1985 to preserve and improve our environment, conserve natural resources, and enhance quality of life in the City of Tucson and eastern Pima County.

These goals are achieved through their educational and hands-on programs emphasizing personal action in programs such as:

Originally established to keep our community litter-free, TCB has grown to coordinate programs and projects with a diversity of partners, including government agencies, community groups, businesses, and the support of thousands of volunteers.

Wildlife Camera

Photo Gallery

The Coalition for Desert Protection's Remote Wildlife Camera Photo Gallery gives local community members the opportunity to monitor wildlife movement and activity in various Sonoran Desert wildlife linkages.

The photos and the data they provide are instrumental in their advocacy work for more protected open spaces, more wildlife crossings, and improvements to local roadways, making them safer for both people and wildlife.

If you would like to volunteer to help this effort by camera monitoring and maintenance, photo database management, or the purchase of equipment, please email their Conservation Science Director Jessica Moreno or call 520-388-9925.
