'Where can I go from your Spirit?
Where can I flee from your presence?
If I go up to the heavens, you are there;
if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.
If I rise on the wings of the dawn,
if I settle on the far side of the sea,
even there your hand will guide me,
your right hand will hold me fast.
If I say, "Surely the darkness will hide me
and the light become night around me,"
even the darkness will not be dark to you;
the night will shine like the day,
for darkness is as light to you.'
God is big, y'all. Often times we try to express what we know about God because even the little we have is so awe inspiring and life changing. But the truth is that even the most holy of us can barely understand a fingernail's worth of God's surpassing greatness.
This is both beautiful and disturbing. It is beautiful because God is literally great. It is disturbing because if we fear the unknown then the most important relationship we have must be scary because God is by definition unknowable at least in his fullness.
I say this because sometimes I think people get lost in the ways we talk about God. Almost everything we say is a metaphor. When we talk about heaven as a place that is a metaphor. We don't go to heaven any more than we go to God. He is everywhere and everywhen. He is here: now. When we talk about God leaving us or us leaving God it is a metaphor for our soul's loneliness and lostness when we are not in touch with the reality of God all around. Even saying "God is big" is a metaphor because there is a place where he is not somewhere and I don't believe there is such a place.
These words from psalm 139 illustrate that for me. The psalmist is taking comfort in the reality that there is no escape from God. He is soothing himself so he will know that he is never without the creator. From the top of the mountain to the bottom of the grave God is there.
Spend a moment thinking about places in your life. Happy places, scary places, and take a moment to breath and consider that God is there. Does that change your relationship to these places?
