"Unless the Lord builds the house,
the builders labor in vain."
There is an old saying "love what you do and you will never work a day in your life." I appreciate that saying but I think it undervalues work itself.
There is a lot of writing and thinking about work in the Christian tradition. St. Benedict who created most of the foundational principles of monasticism talked about work as if it was a form of prayer. When you wash your dishes, he suggests, you should think of them like the dishes for Holy Communion. Work is a sacred and special thing in the monastic tradition because they knew how to keep it in balance.
There are really two things that I gain from these spiritual giants about work: sabbath and intention. In our world we often see work as a negative thing because we don't value rest. Sabbath is a key spiritual virtue and it is difficult to maintain in a world where people bill by the ¼ hour. Recently I saw a large beautiful hourglass in a store I was walking through and I wondered how differently I would feel about my work if I kept a rest timer on my desk to clear my mind with a 5-minute sabbatical every couple hours.
In seminary or in the monastic tradition they had a bell that would ring when it was time for prayer. Whenever Benedict's bell would ring you were supposed to stop whatever you were doing immediately and go to prayer. Rest in God was at least as important as
The other spiritual work balance hack is intention. All work as they see it should and is dedicated to God. How differently would you feel about your work if every worry, every idea, every drop of sweat was dedicated to the God you love. This matters in a profound way. Start every day dedicating it to God's service and I truly believe that your relationship with work will change.
I am not saying that you should listen or even repeat the old saying I started with. I am just inspired by Benedict. Who seem to be saying that loving who you are truly working for changes your relationship with everything you do.

Annual Soup Drive - Every Can Makes a Difference!
It's time for the annual summer soup drive to support MESA Outreach
The generous members of Saint Aidan's have been a consistent blessing to those in need through your support of MESA Outreach. Once the school year is ended, there is an increased demand for easy to fix meals for the children during the summer. Last year alone, MESA provided over 3,000 families with nonperishable food assistance twice each month The collection of hearty soup this summer is paramount to supporting these families.
This will be our fourth year to hold a summer soup drive and we are asking for your continued support. Our goal is to collect 4,000 cans of soup to be sure children do not go hungry. The familiar soup collection can will be in the narthex along with collection bags and an updated status of where we stand in meeting our goal. Heartfelt thanks and Blessing to our St. Aidan's Family

Sundays, 9:15 AM, Classroom 1
We have created our own unique approach to Sunday School. Approximately once a month we have a large gathering for all ages where we teach a Bible story. The weeks leading up to that Sunday School consists of people coming together to help discover, create and implement the upcoming GIFT Sundays. There is a fresh leadership team for every month, but all are welcome every Sunday whether you will make it to the GIFT or not. The best way to know the Creator is to create. Join us for the learning and fun!
