"I will give you the keys to the Kingdom of heaven. "
Did you ever have one of those moments when you realized, "boy, am I dumb."
That happened to me yesterday.
A bit of background, this summer we had a fantastic speaker, Jamie Martin-Currie, who came to St. Aidan's to preach and talk about youth ministry. She used this fantastic metaphor of giving youth keys after telling a story of a youth whose life was changed when he was given a set of keys to his church. Ever since then "keys" have been a guiding metaphor for Taylor and I about our work with youth. We think that actually empowering youth with ministry is the best way to help them grow in faith, love and character, and when we talk about empowering youth in their ministry here we often say things like, "Which keys does this person have?" "Could they use more? Or do they need more coaching and support where they are at."
Then yesterday I was reflecting on my own walk of faith and I realized that for one of my most significant moments in my life of faith came when I was handed a literal key. I was on a youth mission trip. I was a junior in high school, I think. It was a year almost exactly after a good friend of mine had died of cancer. I heard that news on the mission trip the year before. Something must have been brewing in me but I didn't know that anything was different. We were staying in this Episcopal Church in Bellingham, WA, and one of the adults on the trip knew the church well. Her father had served as a priest there. I have no idea what made her think to do this but one evening she walked over to me handed me a key to the sanctuary and said, "here, in case you want to spend some time in there." I was a very compliant child so I don't even remember considering it. I just grabbed my guitar and headed into this beautiful sanctuary that I had never seen before.
It was awkward at first. I was kneeling at the altar rail because I didn't really know what to do. And somewhere in the silence I got this sense as clear as if I heard it from a voice, but there was only silence and the clattering from the street outside. And the silence said to me, "I want you to sing." I picked up my guitar and started improvising songs of prayer. In cased in suspended chords I cried out for my friend who had died and for another who I was terribly worried about. Objectively I have no idea what it sounded like, but it was an experience of music like I had never had before or since.
After a long time I walked out of that church forever changed. I grew up in the church so I can't really say that I found faith that day but it was the day that my faith became a part of who I am. My faith became like and arm or a leg to me.
I have told that story of being in that church many times, but today I am more curious about the youth minister who handed me the key. I was the only one that week who got that chance. Could she see something i
n me? Did she see the priest that I was to become? Or was I just the first youth she saw after it was placed in her hand. I am ashamed to say, I can't even remember her name, but her simple gift of trust will stay with me forever.
1. What keys do you have?
2. Who gave them to you and when?
3. Is there someone in your life that could use a set?

Exciting New Developments in Sunday School!
This school year we are beginning some new and innovative Sunday School programming.
For Prek-3rd grade (on non-GIFT Sundays) we will be using a special curriculum that uses Legos to teach the Bible. As Rev. Les put it, "This method is simple, and beautiful and powerful and it is the first accessible Sunday School curriculum I have ever seen that truly empowers the soul of a child."
For 4th grade-Adult we have created our own unique approach to Sunday School. Approximately once a month we have a large gathering for all ages where we teach a Bible story. The weeks leading up to that Sunday School consists of people coming together to help discover, create and implement the upcoming GIFT Sundays. There is a fresh leadership team for every month, but all are welcome every Sunday whether you will make it to the GIFT or not. The best way to know the Creator is to create. Join us for the learning and the fun.
Children's Chapel is available at our 10:30 service. It is a place for children to worship in the traditions of our faith but in a way that's geared towards Pre K - 3rd grade. A procession will guide the children to the chapel in the beginning of the service and the kids rejoin their families for Communion.
We have a great group of youth. Warm inviting and impressive. They generally meet Sunday nights from 12-1-30 pm, but check the schedule to the left.
