The Tranquility of Salvation
It is always nice when God's blessings become visible. Ten years ago today I was ordained a priest. It was something that I had worked for, something I had hoped for, something I had sacrificed for, something I had faced ridicule for and doubt about. Yet this call was my companion in the dark and cold times as well as the warm and loving. On the day of my ordination the Bishop prayed this prayer below. It is definitely full of episco-church speak but indulge me and pray it with me:
"O God of unchangeable power and eternal light: Look favorably on your whole Church, that wonderful and sacred mystery; by the effectual working of your providence, carry out in tranquility the plan of salvation; let the whole world see and know that things which were being cast down are being raised up, and things which had grown old are being made new, and that all things are being brought to their perfection by him through whom all things were made, your Son Jesus Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen." - Book of Common Prayer p. 528.
I love the contrast between the image of God as unchangeable and eternal with the dynamic quality of God's work of salvation (healing). God is anchored in wonderful and scared mystery, but what he is doing is raising that which has been cast down and making old things new as he brings ALL things to their perfection in Jesus. And we pray that all this craziness is carried out in tranquility. That my friends is a hoot.
I don't know how much tranquility I have seen in the last ten years but I have definitely seen those cast down be lifted up. I witness every day the old things become new and stand in awe as people, their pains, and their struggles even their death is brought to perfection in Jesus.
If I have learned one lesson in this time it is always to rely on God. I have not had one plan, one thought, one joke that has not crashed and burned if it wasn't born of his grace and my connection to him. I owe all the love in my heart, all the strength of my will, all the insight in my brain to him and the "effectual working of [his] providence." (FYI-I used that quote not to be impressive but because the prayer book genuinely and simultaneously inspires me and cracks me up).
Yet this blog is not for me. Like the priesthood itself it is for you. So I hope you can take something from my decade old ramblings that will make you pause with wonder. I hope that you will take a deep breath of God's loving spirit and meditate on your journey with God today. What is he raising up in you? What is becoming new? Where do you find God's tranquil power below the tosses and turns of his playful salvation?
