Transforming Healthcare, Providing Hope
"I had just had a stroke when I came to Heal the City. I was very scared of what would happen to me since I didn't have health insurance. Our provider Lupe did a great job at making us feel less anxious by welcoming us with love and kindness. My wife also became a patient here shortly after I did because of the effect breast cancer has had on her health. Since becoming patients at Heal the City, both of us have had drastic improvements in our health. My diabetes and hypertension have fallen to normal levels which have made me feel drastically better. We were so excited when we received awards during the shalom banquet. I and my wife both carry these awards with us everywhere because they are a reminder of how far we have come since being here. We finally have some stability in our lives and in our health which is such a weight off our shoulders. We are so thankful and blessed to be patients at a clinic where the staff gives us undivided attention. ~ Jose and Norma M.
Dr. Keister offered free health screening at various schools in Amarillo. There was an overwhelming response, over 500 individuals being seen within the first 2-hours open. The members of the community demonstrated that they were suffering from a lack of access to healthcare. In 2014, a partnership was formed with Generation Next Church, and the vision of opening a free medical clinic, Heal the City, was born. The clinic opened its doors and offered free healthcare to the community on a weekly basis. Today, Heal the City has grown in many areas from additional staff and space. Not only does the clinic provide healthcare visits but it also fills prescriptions, provides childcare for patients during their appointments and conducts wellness classes for the community. Heal the City partners with local churches and has numerous volunteers that help manage the application process, Spanish translators, Wellness instructors, office help, and medical providers. There are many other volunteer and financial support opportunities for those who are interested in helping.
