Particularity

Rev. Joshua Patty

Regional Minister and President

Who can you especially welcome in your ministry?

Recently, I’ve found some encouragement in the words of my colleague Andy Mangum,  Regional Minister of the Christian Church in the Southwest. He shared a short sermon with the College of Regional Ministers earlier this month when we gathered in Louisville. (One of the joys of our College meetings is that different regional ministers share short sermons during our daily devotional time.)

Admitting the real challenges of ministry alongside gospel hope – in a powerful cadence comparing examples of crucifixion and resurrection – Andy suggested that we can find hope by embracing some particularity in our ministry. Rather than trying to be all things to all people, we can and should focus our efforts.

What particular things do you do in ministry that positively impact others? Can you lean into them more?

If you’re looking for ways to deepen or reenergize your efforts, I think that Andy’s question is the right place to start? Who can you especially welcome in your ministry? Who can you seek engagement with? Who can you intentionally listen to? What new relationships can you seek to begin?

Lenten Video Series

The 8th and final video message of my Lenten series, “Out of Brokenness” premieres on Wednesday, April 23 – Resurrection & Sight. The special Holy Week video was a Communion meditation – At this Table. Here is a link to the full playlist on our regional YouTube channel.

Celebration of Jerry & Linda Wolf

Come celebrate Jerry & Linda's time as the interim co-directors on May 3 at 3p, at the Christian Conference Center. Come all day to help prepare the CCC for summer, or come just for the celebration! Please RSVP to Crystal at reservations@newtonccc.org so we can have a count for food.

Have a passion for the Christian Conference Center? We are looking for your help to get the CCC ready for spring and for summer camp on May 2-4. Come for all or come for some. Many hands make light work! For more information or to volunteer, email Eric at eric@newtonccc.org.

There will be a separate celebration for Jerry & Linda's ministry as co-interim directors of the CCC on May 3 at 3p. Please RSVP for an accurate food count.

Praying in Hard Times

What does it take to offer meaningful and faithful prayers about hard things? Our Upper Midwest region will offer an online class where worship leaders, elders, ministers, and others can explore three things: personal preparation, praying in private places (like a hospital room), and praying in public worship about hard things.

“Praying in Hard Times” will be held online via Zoom on Saturday, May 10 from 10am-12noon. The class will include presentations by folks from the Upper Midwest region and facilitated small group discussions. Register here.

Decolonizing Prayer - The Stable Study Church

Rev. Dr. Jia Starr Brown is excited to share a Bible Study that focuses on a variety of current events and relevant themes - with decolonization and liberation in mind. In these trying times, it is more needed than ever. Join her for Decolonizing Prayer. This session will meet online on Thursday, May 29th, from 7p-8p. Find The Stable Study Church's website here. Go here to register.

Summer Camp 2025

Registration for the 2025 Summer Camp Season is open! This year's theme is Another Way. "Jesus often confronted the world around him with another way of being and by his example, we are reminded that God always invites us to reimagine who we are and how we do things. In the peace of the space at camp, we will explore what would change if we lived as our authentic selves and respected the truths of others. In this humility, we will imagine how growing changes the way live." Promotional material, updated to include Senior Retreat dates, can be found here.
