Many Things

Rev. Josh Patty

Regional Minister & President

I returned from sabbatical February 11. I’m deeply grateful for the time and space of sabbatical for reflection, study, relaxation and for our staff and leaders who handled my key responsibilities.

I was struck by how rarely I needed to rush through a meal to “get to….” My time in February has been focused on catching up on big things, with a return to a pretty normal schedule in March – just in time for Ministers Institute, where I hope to connect with many of you.

Minister Standing

In February, our regional Committee on Ministry reviewed all applications for standing received in a timely manner. Ministers granted standing will receive their letters and cards during Ministers Institute or by mail following. Those who submitted applications and were not granted standing will be contacted by a member of our Committee on Ministry.

Lenten Videos

This Lent, I will be sharing 2-3 minute video meditations on the theme, Remember Your Baptism. These videos are appropriate for use in worship services, devotions for small groups or education classes, sharing on social media, etc. – please use them to support and strengthen your ministry. Videos premiere each Tuesday at 9 am on our YouTube channel (playlist link). Planned videos: Confession & Baptism (Feb 17), Baptized into Christ (Feb 24), Preparation Seasons (Mar 3), Baptized Living (Mar 10), Sacrament (Mar 17), Remembering and Re-membering (Mar 24), God’s Promises (Mar 31), Hope (Apr 7).

Recorded Sermons You Can Use

Again this year, our region will prepare and record three sermons you can use in your congregations: after Easter, summer related to General Assembly, and after Christmas.

General Assembly 2026

Details are emerging about this year’s General Assembly, the first of our new schedule of annual gatherings (online, onsite, or hybrid). There are lots of questions about the technology for this year’s online gathering, how congregational delegates will work, etc. Keep up to date here and notice this week’s online sessions for tech leaders.

Pastor 2 Pastor

In an endeavor to support our pastors on their journey toward wholeness while pastoring to this fractured world, the Executive Committee of the Regional Commission on Ministry is doing a new thing! Our pastors need a pastor, so we are developing a program, a Care Unit, for pastors to check in with other pastors on a regular basis. The structure is still developing, so as we wait, please remember that you are beloved children of God and that your Commission on Ministry cares about you. Read the full press release here.

Christians Uniting on Palm Sunday

The teachings of Christianity center around feeding the hungry, healing the sick, and welcoming the stranger. (Matthew 25:31-46) On Palm Sunday, Christians remember Jesus’ non-violent and powerful protest march into Jerusalem. We wave palms in remembrance of Jesus’ peaceful resistance to the death-dealing oppressive ways of Caesar, Herod and the Roman Empire. On Palm Sunday afternoon,  March 29th, Christians in Iowa and around the nation will be joining in a mass action, following The Way of Jesus. Disciples of Christ are invited to join with Presbyterian, UCC, Methodist, Lutheran and other ecumenical friends in a new movement called “Standing With Our Neighbors”.

This is our “March on Washington” moment! We’ll join with a broad coalition of Iowa’s clergy, congregations and denominational leaders in reclaiming Christianity as the embodiment of Jesus’ command to love our neighbors as ourselves. Please join us in this strong and meaningful movement based in faith and scripture, with an emphasis on Matthew 25 – caring for our neighbors. Celebrations for Clergy Colleagues

Congratulations to Donna Murphy-Ceradsky and FCC, Ames. Donna was installed as their transitional interim on Feb. 8.

Prayers for Clergy Colleagues

There is a holy and sacred responsibility for each of us to hold one another in prayer. Colleagues of all ages experience health issues, life-altering experiences filled with concern and joy, as well as the fatigue and energy of ministry. Take a moment to offer prayer for one another.

We pray for Mary Jane Button-Harrison and her family upon the passing of her mother, Mary Lou Harrison. The funeral will be held on March 14 at FCC, Ames, IA. The visitation is at 1p, and the funeral at 2p, with a luncheon following. Find the obituary here.

We pray for Arlene Johnson as she continues treatments through April.

We give thanks for Caila Rinker's successful surgery, and we pray for her as she continues treatments.

We pray for Rev. Ben Masters and Rev. Dan Adolphson, pastors of FCC, Minneapolis; and Rev. Dennis Sanders and Rev. Teresa Kim Pecinovsky, pastors of FCC, St. Paul, as they care for their congregations and communities.
