Leadership in the Wind

Rev. Josh Patty

Regional Minister & President

Recently, I was taken by an image of leadership as being carried or sailing in the wind, rather than trying to block or control the wind. If wind is a good image of the Holy Spirit, perhaps this might invite different understandings of faithful ministry. At the very least, it might be good to explore in a sermon or newsletter article.

Experiences in Minnesota

My prayers have often focused on actions and reactions in Minnesota in recent months. Since I have returned, I have not said much – not because I lack strong opinions, though. Partially, I think my role is to amplify the voices of others with direct experience. The Christian Century (online and in a future print issue) features an interview with Rev. Teresa Kim Pecinovsky, who serves as Associate Minister of First Christian Church, St. Paul. We should all be proud and grateful for our colleagues and their faithful witness to the Gospel.

Praying for Ministers

As we approach Holy Week, my mind turns to the important ministry we share. I pray you lead us into healing, wholeness, and hope in the coming days. Based on time spent with dozens of clergy since I returned from sabbatical, I recognized the heavy burdens many of us are carrying this season. So I invited our region to pray for all of us.

Disciples History Resource Team

I want our region to create Disciples History resources that can be shared in our congregations across several months. As I mentioned at Ministers Institute, I am looking for people interested in shaping and leading this effort. If you are interested, or even curious, please contact me.

Continuing Education

Remember: you don’t have to wait until the fall to complete your continuing education and anti-racism experience requirements. Each issue, we publish learning opportunities (Spoiler Alert: there are good ARPR hybrid opportunities in April). You can keep a document detailing different ways you meet the requirements, plus your learning/growth.

Pastor 2 Pastor

It is taking form and it is coming soon!  It is exciting to see how the Pastor2Pastor program of care for our regional clergy is coming together. More and more what we already know is being revealed: we are a region of warm and loving hearts.

The responses from the Ministers’ Institute revealed how important this work is. We need more than ever to form relationships that add support to our lives. We need relationships that recognize, affirm, and assure us that as clergy, we are not alone. Building relationships is what this program is all about.

Keep watch!

This Day: When Love Answers... On that first day of the week, grief and uncertainty were met with resurrection hope. Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and proclaimed, "I saw the Master!", bearing witness to a love that answered her sorrow with new life. Through the Easter Offering, we respond to God's resurrection love by sharing in God's work in the world. The offering provides vital support for the general ministries of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), including health and social services ministries. For more information.

Christians Uniting on Palm Sunday

The teachings of Christianity center around feeding the hungry, healing the sick, and welcoming the stranger. (Matthew 25:31-46) On Palm Sunday, Christians remember Jesus’ non-violent and powerful protest march into Jerusalem. We wave palms in remembrance of Jesus’ peaceful resistance to the death-dealing oppressive ways of Caesar, Herod and the Roman Empire. On Palm Sunday afternoon,  March 29th, Christians in Iowa and around the nation will be joining in a mass action, following The Way of Jesus. Disciples of Christ are invited to join with Presbyterian, UCC, Methodist, Lutheran and other ecumenical friends in a new movement called “Standing With Our Neighbors”.

This is our “March on Washington” moment! We’ll join with a broad coalition of Iowa’s clergy, congregations and denominational leaders in reclaiming Christianity as the embodiment of Jesus’ command to love our neighbors as ourselves. Please join us in this strong and meaningful movement based in faith and scripture, with an emphasis on Matthew 25 – caring for our neighbors. Ecumenical Conversations

Disciples and United Church of Christ

Leaders from the Disciples and the UCC met to strengthen our historic partnership. That partnership is rooted in a shared ecumenical spirit and a history of collaboration in mission and ministry. Over many decades, the two churches have maintained close relationships through theological dialogue, joint mission initiatives, and participation in ecumenical and interfaith organizations. One of those is Global Ministries, the joint international mission body. Read the full news release here.

Ecumenical Conversations

Disciples and Evangelical Lutheran Church of America

Leaders from the Disciples and the ELCA met in February for their latest session of their ongoing bilateral dialogue. Under the theme "Reforming and Restoring Through Scripture," the gathering continued a decades-long commitment to deepen mutual understanding and shared witness. The presentations generated sustained conversation on authority, the role of creeds, the place of the Old Testament, and the function of scripture. Read the full news release.

It's official - General Assembly is happening on July 10 & 11. This will be the first year of holding GA online, and details are still emerging. Registration for GA opens in March. For more information.

Prayers for Clergy Colleagues

There is a holy and sacred responsibility for each of us to hold one another in prayer. Colleagues of all ages experience health issues, life-altering experiences filled with concern and joy, as well as the fatigue and energy of ministry. Take a moment to offer prayer for one another.

We pray for Arlene Johnson as she continues treatments through April.

We give thanks for Caila Rinker's successful surgery, and we pray for her as she continues treatments.

We pray for Rev. Ben Masters and Rev. Dan Adolphson, pastors of FCC, Minneapolis; and Rev. Dennis Sanders and Rev. Teresa Kim Pecinovsky, pastors of FCC, St. Paul, as they care for their congregations and communities.
