R & R

Rev. Joshua Patty

Regional Minister and President

Summer is upon us. I do hope that your schedule will relax in the coming weeks to allow you additional space for rest, reflection, dreaming.

Here’s a brief article of encouragement about rhythms of rest. One of these can happen almost naturally these months – except for Vacation Bible School, most congregations don’t have many weeks with multiple meeting nights in the summer. What would it look like if you tried to extend that experience in the fall?

Take your sabbath time. Take your vacation time. It will enrich you and your ministry, be good for your family and benefit your congregation/ministry context. None of us were created to be available and active 24 hours a day. Even Jesus took time away from his ministry – my guess is that you and I need such time away even more than he did.

Don’t be selfish about sabbath and rest either. Talk about it with other leaders in your ministry. Encourage them in experiencing and modeling sabbath and rest. Celebrate their time away just as you celebrate yours.

Reading and Planning – Youth

Duke shared a lovely article about active youth ministry which featured a DOC congregation in Kentucky (written by the coauthor of the new Chalice book, Thriving Church: What We Can Learn from Faithful Congregations). Lots of insights about what strong youth ministry can be.

Q&A of General Assembly Business Items

Regional Minister Joshua Patty will host an online Q&A session about General Assembly business items on Tuesday, July 1 at 6:30p. 2025 Regional Prayer Calendar

General Assembly

The General Assembly of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) will gather in person from July 12-15, 2025, in Nashville, TN. The theme: "Beyond" based on Ephesians 3:20-21. Registration is open! Two more hotels in downtown Memphis have been added as options with General Assembly rates.

Congregational Resources: There are 6-week Bible Study and Sermon resources connected with the 2025 General Assembly and its theme, “Beyond.” Access the Bible Study series here. Access the sermon series resources here.

Learn and Worship with The Stable as opportunity to gain ARPR hours

You can support a new ministry in our region, The Stable, and gain hours of Anti-racism/Pro-reconciliation experience at the same time!

The Stable is an online study church led by Rev. Jia Starr Brown and supported by our Upper Midwest region. (Timely connection – when you and your congregation make gifts to the Pentecost Special Offering, some of the money directly supports new ministries like The Stable.) The study sessions are held on Thursday nights, which allows people from many congregations – or no congregation – to join in the learning and worship. See the website here.

This summer, The Stable is offering a few 1-topic sessions, such as Decolonizing Prayer and Decolonizing Church Music. These are efforts to better understand how human culture sometimes overshadows God’s gospel; the hope is to better see and live out Jesus’ true teaching without human add-ons or negations. Participation in these sessions will meet ARPR experience requirements for annual ministerial standing.

Summer Sermon

Josh Patty, Regional Minister & President, will be providing a sermon for use during the summer, but specifically around General Assembly, which is July 12-15 in Memphis, TN. Register for GA here.

Instructions on how to access the recording will be sent sooner to that time.

Pentecost Special Offering

June 1 & 8

Our ancestors began building a movement for wholeness in a fragmented world, going above and beyond church as it’s always been. Your participation in the 2025 Pentecost Offering goes above and beyond what’s been done to what God’s spirit is doing next. Half of the gifts remain in the Upper Midwest to support its new church movement. The other half goes to support the efforts of New Church MinistryFind resources and more information here.

Congratulations to Laurie Pound-Feille on her retirement as senior minister of First Christian Church, Minneapolis!

Congratulations to John Bolen on the 50th anniversary of his ordination!

Congratulations to John Bennet on the 60th anniversary of his ordination! FCC, Jefferson City, MO, will be hosting a party for him on June 22. He was on UMW regional staff in the 1990s.

Prayers for Clergy Colleagues

There is a holy and sacred responsibility for each of us to hold one another in prayer. Colleagues of all ages experience health issues, life-altering experiences filled with concern and joy, as well as the fatigue and energy of ministry. Take a moment to offer prayer for one another.

We pray for Don Naftz's healing. Don suffered a fall and broken clavicle last week.
