Ministry Together

Clergy Resources from the Christian Church in the Upper Midwest

May | 2026

As Summer Begins...

Rev. Josh Patty

Regional Minister & President

The first planned annual General Assembly will be held online July 10-11. I hope you and others in your congregation will participate. This is a sincere effort to build a gathering, using technology online, to allow more people across the church to participate in a large gathering without significant financial costs and requiring people to commit almost a week to travel and attend.

I will host a region-wide online information session about the upcoming General Assembly on Wednesday, June 10 at 6:30pm. (Ministers are welcome to attend a special Clergy Chat on this topic that afternoon at 1pm.) I know there are many questions. My guess is that this will be a learning experience. I also anticipate there will be valuable connections.

AI

I suspect that artificial intelligence will greatly impact our lives more in the next 10 years. I’m seeking out more thoughtful information and conversations about AI and how it will impact ministry. Still, I was surprised by recent research indicating ministers have significantly less trust in AI than other people of faithIs this a quirk in the polling based on wording of questions?  Or do pastors have a different attitude about AI?  A recent article suggests one reason to be wary (see Disruption 3). AI creates easy connections that could substitute for valued and messy relationships. This undercuts the types of relationships we value and cultivate.

Clergy fatigue and burnout

Too often, I hear about – or speak with – ministry colleagues who are worn out. Ministry is often a life-giving thing, but to some people it seems much harder in recent years. For Disciples ministers, the increasing tribalism of our culture cuts against the very types of communities we strive to lead with varied perspectives valuing shared goals and identity as followers of Jesus. Recent articles suggest other factors too, such as moral fatigue felt by leaders of all sorts, and how aggressive tribalism may be encouraging more loneliness for ministers.

Our region’s new Pastor 2 Pastor program seeks to support our clergy. Our regional Commission on Ministry has assembled a dozen ministers who will invite one-on-one conversations with colleagues at least 4 times a year. I hope all of our ministers will welcome these conversations and that this will strengthen our collective ministry.

Other Reading

The most recent report from Hartford about congregations shows improving connection and participation data in most congregations, including an increase in average onsite worship attendance – the first upswing in years. Most of this, however, is not experienced in mainline congregations.

Storm Damage?

We are in the heart of storm season in the Upper Midwest. Remember, if your congregation or any participant has significant property damage or loss due to weather, Week of Compassion can help. Michael Shepherd now is our primary contact, serving as the new Disaster Response Manager. You can contact him directly with needs at 317-586-2360.

Regional Gathering

Pastor 2 Pastor

It is taking form and it is coming soon!  It is exciting to see how the Pastor2Pastor program of care for our regional clergy is coming together. More and more what we already know is being revealed: we are a region of warm and loving hearts.

The responses from the Ministers’ Institute revealed how important this work is. We need more than ever to form relationships that add support to our lives. We need relationships that recognize, affirm, and assure us that as clergy, we are not alone. Building relationships is what this program is all about.

Keep watch!

Statement on Louisiana v. Callais

Disciples Home Missions

DHM President & CEO, Chris Dorsey, released a statement regarding the April 29 Supreme Court’s ruling in Louisiana v. Callais. This is the second time DHM has released a statement; the first following Shelby County v. Holder. Find it here. There was also a Voting Rights Discussion hosted by DHM. Watch the recording here.

This will be the first year of holding GA online, and details are still emerging. Watch the introductory video here. More than just a series of meetings, General Assembly is a covenantal table set for education, discussion, worship, business, fellowship, and action. Each congregation is invited to boldly claim their covenantal place at the table by inviting everyone to attend online and by prayerfully designating 3 delegates to vote at General Assembly. Registration is open! For more information.

Faithful Financial Leadership for Congregations

Center for Faith & Giving

Take time this summer to strengthen one of the most critical - and often most complex - areas of congregational life: financial ministry. Faithful Financial Leadership for Congregations is a 4-session webinar series designed for pastors, treasurers, and church leaders who want to lead with clarity, integrity, and confidence. Across the four 90 minute sessions, you’ll gain practical tools. For more information.

Celebrations for Clergy Colleagues

Ryan Osler is now "Commission-ready," having completed the discernment process with our Committee on Ministry, Commissioning Unit.

Prayers for Clergy Colleagues

There is a holy and sacred responsibility for each of us to hold one another in prayer. Colleagues of all ages experience health issues, life-altering experiences filled with concern and joy, as well as the fatigue and energy of ministry. Take a moment to offer prayer for one another.

Continued prayers for Molly Goodrich as she recovers from a life-threatening infection. She is now participating in therapies in a hospital rehabilitation setting.

The memorial service for Margaret Hutchens will be held on Saturday, June 6 at 1p at First Congregational Church of Mason City, IA. The address is 100 1st St NE, Mason City, IA. Dan Adolphson and Tom Seeberger will be leading the service.

We pray for Arlene Johnson as she continues treatments through May.

We give thanks for Caila Rinker's successful surgery, and we pray for her as she continues treatments.

We pray for Rev. Ben Masters and Rev. Dan Adolphson, pastors of FCC, Minneapolis; and Rev. Dennis Sanders and Rev. Teresa Kim Pecinovsky, pastors of FCC, St. Paul, as they care for their congregations and communities.
