Giving Thanks

Rev. Liz Woodward

Sabbatical Regional Minister

Ilia Delio wrote “I do not exist in order that I may possess; rather I exist in order that I may give of myself, for it is in giving that I am myself.” (From the introduction of Joyce Rupp’s Vessels of Love.)

Thanksgiving is literally within our grasp. Many individuals spend quality time with family and friends gathered around a table plentifully set with food. Recognition of the scarcity of food and even fellowship within our communities also rests on our hearts this season. Traveling to congregations this fall, I am deeply grateful to witness the overpouring of food items being collected and/or financial contributions being offered. It is a simple testament to the power of giving of self.

From Thanksgiving, we move into the season of Advent. The beginning of the Christian year, a time to set focus on God’s presence with us in the innocence of a child, the faithfulness of parents who act on what seems the impossible, and a world too often dark, awaiting yet again the gift of light. It is remarkable to participate year after year in this well-known and yet ever-new story of God’s redemption. Once again, we encounter the opportunity to give of ourselves in worship, faithfulness, and peace through acts of justice.

My friends, the beautiful simplicity of God’s story of love for this world guides us through these seasons of thanksgiving and Advent. Called to lead, to remind others of God’s presence, to speak truth in a world caught by deceit, the hope found in giving ourselves to others models the heart of faith.

Deep peace,

Liz Woodward

Instructions on how to access the sermon will be sent no later than Dec. 22.

2026 Stewardship Sessions

Introducing the Center for Faith & Giving's 2026 Stewardship Sessions! For 1 hour on the 2nd Thursday of the month, we’ll explore a new dimension of cultivating faithful generosity—from care for self and creation, missional storytelling, gratitude, and generational differences. Together, we'll begin to see year-round stewardship as a life-giving practice that sustains ministry and deepens discipleship. For more information.

Fundraising with DCEF

Thriving communities of faith often need to raise funds for a specific purpose or ongoing upkeep. Disciples Church Extension Fund (DCEF)’s experts guide them through how to inspire their faith communities to be more. On average, places of worship who follow DCEF’s plan meet or exceed their fundraising goals, and that can make a huge difference in their ministry’s success. If your congregation, camp, or other ministry has the vision, DCEF can help make it a reality. Contact Jim Michel for more information.

Prayers for Clergy Colleagues

There is a holy and sacred responsibility for each of us to hold one another in prayer. Colleagues of all ages experience health issues, life-altering experiences filled with concern and joy, as well as the fatigue and energy of ministry. Take a moment to offer prayer for one another.

We pray for the family and friends of Margaret Hutchens at her passing into eternal life. Her Celebration of Life is at 1p on Nov. 29th at First Congregational Church in Mason City, IA.

We pray for Arlene Johnson as she begins treatments in December.

We pray for Caila Rinker as she begins treatments.
