LMHF's Treasurer Brenda McEachern and Executive Director Roberta Martell tour the Emergency Department.
Emergency Department construction update
Significant progress has been made on Lady Minto’s Emergency Department in the past two months. Construction crews have been hard at work installing windows, doors, and curtain walls, while other tradespeople have been working to install the Variable Air Volume system—a fancy type of HVAC system where the volume of air supplied to different zones is varied based on their temperature and occupancy, reducing energy consumption. Read on at the link below for more pictures and details.

Meet your newly-elected Local Community Commissioners
On May 27, Salt Spring elected four candidates for its first ever Local Community Commission. The body of elected officials will administer a scope of Salt Spring Island-specific services in place of the Capital Regional District.
During the election period, LMHF reached out to the candidates to get their perspectives and positions on issues related to health, well-being, and healthcare on our island. Read on to hear what your newly-elected Commissioners had to say about these topics.

A thank you to our former Board Chair Dave Taylor
As Dave Taylor steps back from his role as chair of the Lady Minto Hospital Foundation board, we extend our deepest thanks for all his work. Over the last two years, Dave has guided us through unprecedented pandemic challenges and complexities, all while leading us to raise more funds than at any other time in the Foundation's history.

What's happening this month at Lady Minto Hospital?
Despite the staffing challenges faced both locally and in the healthcare system writ large, the staff at Lady Minto Hospital deserve recognition and thanks for their tireless efforts to continue providing the best care possible to the residents of Salt Spring Island and the southern Gulf Islands in the face of these difficult circumstances.
On behalf of the community, Lady Minto Hospital Foundation extends its deep gratitude to our healthcare workers for everything that they do.

Seabreeze update: LMHF seeks injunction to start construction
|
As many in our community know, the Foundation is currently involved in a legal process to seek vacant occupancy of our building at 101 Bittancourt—the site of the former Seabreeze Inne—through the courts. We find ourselves having to resort to this measure despite an indemnification from BC Housing, and a promise from David Eby (when he was A.G. and Minister Responsible for Housing), that his office would take charge of this file and resolve it.
LMHF has applied for an emergency injunction which was heard in Supreme Court in early May. While an injunction does not determine the legal issues at hand, it seeks to have the occupants removed in order to mitigate the ongoing damages. The justice reserved his decision, which we hope he returns in support of our application within the next few weeks.

Note from the Chair
It’s the beginning of a new fiscal year for Lady Minto Foundation, and I want to take this opportunity to extend a heartfelt thank you on behalf of everyone at the Foundation and at Lady Minto Hospital to all our community members who have supported the hospital over the past 12 months.
Though it was formally a year of “rest” after the overwhelming success of our ED Capital Campaign, we at the Foundation have been truly touched by the community members who included us in their giving this year, from dedicated longtime donors, to new donors just beginning their relationship with the Lady Minto family.
The community’s commitment to funding this project, followed by your support in buying the Seabreeze to provide much-needed staff housing, gives us the confidence to keep planning for the future.

Celebrating Nurses Week at Lady Minto Hospital
LMHF staff joined the NICER Committee in May in the Lady Minto Lounge to host a lunch celebrating Nurses’ Week. Held May 6–12 each year, Nurses’ Week highlights the vital role that nurses play in healthcare and is an opportunity to show gratitude to nurses for the critical work they do. We at Lady Minto Hospital Foundation acknowledge, celebrate and appreciate our nurses' contributions and commitment to patient care—thank you nurses!
And thank you to the NICER Committee for their continued work facilitating community and connection at Lady Minto.

Financial planning in the face of dementia
As Canada's population ages, dementia continues to be a growing concern amongst Canadians. According to the Alzheimer Society of Canada, over 747,000 Canadians are currently living with some form of dementia, and that number is expected to double over the next decade. With the physical and emotional challenges that come with a dementia diagnosis, it's important to also consider how it may impact your financial future.

Lives well lived:
Remembering Cara Joy Hughes
| | |
Her Salt Spring neighbours over the last thirty years knew Cara Joy Hughes for her determined daily walks with one of a succession of equally determined dogs. She always took time to exchange a few words with us, but had we only known how remarkable her life and achievements were, what conversations we might have had! The anthropologist Clifford Geertz wrote that one of the most significant facts about human beings may be that “we all begin with the natural equipment to live a thousand kinds of life but end in the end having lived only one.” Cara Joy Hughes’ multi-faceted life disputes that.
