Tips from

Lake Zurich

Fire Department

Winter Holiday Fire Safety

  • Inspect holiday lights before you put them up and throw away light strands with frayed of pinched wires.

  • Water your Christmas tree every day. A dry tree can catch on fire easily.

  • Consider using battery-operated flameless candles, which can look, smell and feel like real candles.

  • If you use real candles, make sure they are in stable holders someplace they cannot be knocked down easily.

Prevent a Turkey Fryer Fire

  • Turkey fryers can easily tip over and spill hot oil. Use turkey fryers only outdoors on a sturdy, level surface. Keep a three-foot kids- and pet-free zone around the turkey fryer.

  • An overfilled cooking pot will cause oil to spill over when the turkey is placed inside. Determine the correct amount of oil needed by first placing the turkey in the pot with water.

  • A partially frozen turkey will cause hot oil to splatter. Make sure your turkey is completely thawed before you fry it.

Nearly half of holiday decoration fires happen because decorations are placed too close to a heat source.

Thanksgiving is the peak day for home cooking fires.
