Farewell and R.I.P. John Valenteyn
Obituaries have been posted after the unfortunate passing of John Valenteyn on Sunday October 4 at Toronto Western Hospital after a difficult fight with a rare blood disorder HLH. Co-founder of the Toronto Blues Society in 1985, John was a pillar of the Canadian blues community broadcasting at CIUT 89.5 FM for fourteen years following a twenty year run with The Blues Hour at CJRT (now jazzfm). "His enormous collection made him a natural member of the Maple Blues Award Steering Committee and monthly Maple Blues newsletter reviewer in John’s Blues Picks," said Derek Andrews, President of TBS. "His knowledge and passion for blues recordings and artists made him the leading figure in Canada’s blues history. He will be missed."

A Mental Health and Wellness Workshop
Toronto Blues Society presents Corona Blues: A Mental Health and Wellness Workshop on Monday, October 19 between 7pm-8:30pm! The free online event will cover a variety of strategies to help musicians, industry professionals, and music supporters to help manage their mental health during the time of COVID-19.
 
Led by moderator Pam Beatson (M.Ed in Counselling Psychology), the workshop will cover topics including mindfulness practices, establishing a daily wellness routine, and addictions. Musician and mental health professionals will also join the session to share their insights and tips, while also taking questions from any interested audience members.

Online Public Voting for Maple Blues Awards Starts November 2nd!
Toronto Blues Society's annual national awards show Maple Blues Awards is going virtual on its next edition from 4 different cities! A bundle of awards will be announced next to some exciting performances from Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, and Vancouver each Monday of February! We are launching with a stream from Toronto on Monday, Feb 1st. Mark your calendar now for Mon, Feb 8, 15, and 22 as well. Public voting will still take place during the month of November 2020 and the winners will be announced during the online awards show in February. Stay tuned on this website for the public voting!
TD Toronto Jazz Festival Streaming Concert Series presents Sass Jordan as part of Casa Loma Sessions. The pre-recorded performance features songs from Sass Jordan's recently released first-ever blues album "Rebel Moon Blues" as well as her classic hits and will premiere on Tuesday, October 27th at noon on Toronto Star's website.

Rebel Moon Blues was released earlier this year as Sass Jordan's ninth studio album and her first release in nearly a decade. "The blues has always been a huge part of my life. It’s a big part of what I grew up with. It’s been there through my entire career,” says Jordan. 

Emily Burgess plays the opening set for the event. Repeat performances will be available at torontojazz.com.

We are sad to announce the postponement of this year's 34th Annual Women's Blues Revue which was scheduled for Friday, November 20, 2020 at Roy Thomson Hall due to COVID-19. The new date will be announced as soon as details have been finalized. All ticket holders will be contacted directly via e-mail by Roy Thomson Hall as the ticketing is managed by the venue's box office. You will have the option to hold on to your ticket or to get a refund. Please contact Roy Thomson Hall if you have any further questions in regards to the status of your current ticket. External Emergency Funding Initiatives Announced To Date:

  • CERB (Canada Emergency Response Benefit) - extended for an additional four weeks to a maximum of 28 weeks. The Government will be transitioning to a simplified Employment Insurance (EI) program, effective September 27 to provide income support to those who remain unable to work and are eligible.

  • SOCAN's new program Encore! is paying musicians for live online concerts on Facebook and Instagram.
