Mission 2022 Cancelled

At a CAMTA Board of Directors meeting last week, it was decided to cancel Mission 2022 to Quito.

The safety of our Team members is paramount. We need to be able to travel to, live and work in Quito with minimal risk.The COVID pandemic has created unsurmountable obstacles to bringing Teams to Ecuador safely next spring. While we are incredibly disappointed to miss 2022, we are looking forward to continuing our relationship with Tierra Nueva in the future.

At this time, 64% of Ecuador's population have one dose of vaccination and 57% are fully vaccinated. Ecuador has the third-highest percentage of fully vaccinated people in South America, after Uruguay and Chile, according to Bloomberg’s Vaccine Tracker. We are hopeful that this surge will continue.

While we are not able to travel to Quito, we have been in regular contact with our Brigade Leader, Dr. Patricia Jarrin on how CAMTA might help with anesthetic and surgical equipment so badly needed by our host hospital, Hospital Padre Carollo “Un Canto a la Vida".

Virtual Medical Update Conference

For the past several years, CAMTA surgeons have presented at an Annual Conference on Orthopedic Surgical Procedures, hosted by Tierra Nueva. This year, Dr. Jarrin invited two Canadian orthopedic surgeons to participate in a virtual conference with Hospital Padre Carollo “Un Canto a la Vida" earlier this month.

Pediatric Orthopedic Surgeon, Dr. Sukdeep Dulai opened the conference with a presentation on current assessment and treatment of developmental dysplasia of the hip. Dr. Dulai was chosen for a prestigious traveling fellowship through which she represented Canadian orthopedic surgeons throughout the English-speaking countries of the world. She works at the Stollery Childrens' Hospital in Edmonton.

Dr. Martin Bouliane, an Adult Orthopedic Surgeon, later spoke on glenohumeral instability with bone loss. Dr. Bouliane is a highly accomplished and well-respected shoulder surgeon at the University of Alberta Hospital in Edmonton. He is well known for his research into the treatment of unique and difficult to treat shoulder pathologies.

In her note of thanks, Dr. Jarrin said Dr. Dulai and Dr. Bouliane were "excellent speakers" who knew their subjects well. "We thank CAMTA for these excellent professionals".
