One Heart. One Hope. One Mission.

MESSAGE FROM MISSION ADVANCEMENT

...appealing, atttractive, charming, adorable...

Christmas celebrations at Notre Dame Center have included students (top row) from Grade 3 from St. Jude the Apostle School, Westlake Village, and a pageant by children from Notre Dame Learning Center Preschool (bottom row). Shown here are the baby Jesus, a shepherd and proud parents, Joseph and Mary.

Dear Friends,

Isn’t he cute?  Can’t you imagine the scruffy shepherds from the Bethlehem hills whispering these words as they crept into the shed where Jesus, Mary and Joseph were on that Christmas morn? And then the Magi, oh so wise yet filled with awe in the divine simplicity as they too whispered their amazement.

How many times have you marveled this Christmas season at the photos of children on the cards you are receiving?  Just what is the source of that cuteness? Perhaps it is God’s glory revealed anew. When the angels sang “Glory to God in the highest,” they were inviting the people of those times and all of us so many centuries later to see God’s glory all around us…

Actually, several definitions of cuteness include words and phrases such as

  • Appealing in an endearing way
  • Very attractive
  • Charming
  • Adorable

And so we come to understand that cuteness is part of the divine revelation and attraction we feel. In the midst of an ordinary day, we can realize that God is calling us to recognize, appreciate and adore His presence.

As we celebrate this holy feast and season of Christmas, the Sisters of Notre Dame gratefully acknowledge each of you as our partner on mission—as our relatives, friends, colleagues, Associates, donors, volunteers… Your encouragement and support enables us to foster this adoration of God in all that we see as attractive and cute—thank you! May your hearts be blessed with an abundance of spiritual gifts, this Christmas and throughout 2023.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year,

Sr. Lisa Megaffin, S.N.D.

Director of Mission Advancement Services

FROM THE CALIFORNIA GRAPEVINE

When I was little, you inspired me to read...

Our Lady of Peace School in North Hills, California has adopted a literacy focus with a goal that every student become a proficient reader, writer, speaker, and listener-across all subject areas. The school aims to instill a joy for reading and curiosity for learning.

In the fall of 2021, Sr. Richardlyn Jones began the formidable task of turning a cluttered storage room into a welcoming, technology-enabled modern library. After researching how to organize and display books by grade level and genre, she developed a plan different from the traditional Dewey Decimal System. The boxes of 3,000 books were transformed into an inviting space to read, learn, and grow. Sr. Richardyn is delighted that the 3rd and 4th graders have been particularly invested in the library as their classroom is nearby. These students have spent time helping dust and care for the books as the library was being put together. Parents donated hundreds of hours of service. This transformation was only possible through the dedicated leadership and creativity of Sr. Richardlyn!  Congratulations!

We get letters...

If at all possible, I most respectfully request this note be passed to Sr. Marie Paul Grech (shown in the photo to the right). She made an incredible influence on me during our time together at St. Bonaventure High School in Ventura in 1973-1977. The Sisters of Notre Dame and Irish Franciscan Brothers had a profound effect on me as an individual and a Catholic.

I know Sr. Marie Paul will appreciate these photographs from Ukraine. These are the men and women (in the U.S. Army) that I have trained and equipped to make a difference. Sr. Marie Paul has made a difference in my life and in many of our classmates from SBHS...she encouraged me to write--and I have done so over the past 40 years.

I am in Kyiv, Ukraine and due to the missile strikes yesterday, the power and internet are relatively unreliable. I hope this gets through. You, Sr. Marie Paul, and all the Sisters of Notre Dame remain in my prayers.

Very Respectfully,

Robert F. Clifford
