One Heart. One Hope. One Mission.

MESSAGE FROM MISSION ADVANCEMENT

...the gifts God wants to give us...

Dear Friends,

As this egam is being written, signs of Advent and Christmas are appearing all around. How many times have we commented that Christmas becomes visible earlier and earlier each year? We can complain about the commercialization of Christmas, but in our heart of hearts, perhaps we also appreciate the energy, color, generosity...and joy of the season.

One of my favorite Scripture passages is the scene of Jesus with the woman at the well. To paraphrase His words to her, Jesus said, "If only you knew the gifts God wants to give you..." (John 4:10) As we reflect on the joys of gift-giving, from a child's conversation with Santa...to "secret Santas"...to the timeless story of "The Gift of the Magi" by O. Henry, we recognize that gifts are treasures which express God's love...and ours.

With that in mind, we are grateful to share several gifts that the ministries of the Sisters of Notre Dame have received in East Africa, through the generosity of the Conrad Hilton Fund for Sisters. These grants have addressed the continuing need for clean water resources. At Notre Dame Primary School in Njiro, Arusha, Tanzania, a borehole was drilled and storage tanks, piping and a filtration system to various parts of the campus were installed. There's much more to the story--read all about it and learn about the smiles of the children pictured at the sink.

St. Julie Mission in Buseesa, Uganda, now has a filtration system to purify the ground water. Previously water was boiled by burning wood, but in the last 25 years, Uganda has lost 63% of its forests due to tree-cutting for firewood. Another filtration method was the use of purifying tablets made of iodine or chlorine. Long-term use of these tablets posed certain health risks. Read more about this project and share the excitement of the children shown with Sr. Rozaria.

We thank and congratulate Jen Coito, California's Associate Director of Mission Advancement, for her tireless efforts to assist with grant-writing and grant-reporting for these transformative projects!

And so as we embrace the gifts of the season, especially the joy of giving, please know that the Sisters of Notre Dame deeply appreciate your presence in our lives. As our partners on mission, together, we can bring joy into the lives of those in need and in turn, feel even greater joy...as givers. The gift God wants to give us...is the joy of giving...

Blessings always,

Sr. Lisa Megaffin, S.N.D.

FROM THE CALIFORNIA GRAPEVINE

St. Matthias at 99+ years

...continuing the SND mission

On Sunday, Nov. 5, former principals Sr. Antoinette Moon, Sr. Betty Bienlein and Sr. Colette Theobald visited St. Matthias Parish in Huntington Park. They are shown here with Alejandra Alvarez on the right, current St. Matthias principal. They kicked off the SND California Centennial and invited parishioners to the Jan. 28 Religious Jubilarian Mass. St. Matthias was one of the original schools founded by the SNDs in California in 1924.

Bishop "Swavek"

...welcoming an SND friend

as our regional bishop

Most Rev. Bishop Slawomir Szkredka was officially installed as bishop of the Santa Barbara Pastoral Region on Sunday, Nov. 26 at Mission Basilica San Buenaventura. Several SNDs were privileged to attend--Sr. Gina Marie Blunck, Sr. Anncarla Costello and Sr. Rebekah Kennedy. The SNDs at Notre Dame Center, which is located in his region, look forward to welcoming him back. Shortly before he was named an auxiliary bishop of Los Angeles, he gave a retreat for the sisters at the Center. We wish you many blessings, Bishop Swavek!

Notre Dame Academy

...sharing with those in need

Elizabeth Ward, Director of Mission and Ministry at Notre Dame Academy, is shown here with an abundance of food for the families of South Central LAMP for Thanksgiving. NDA partnered with Mayfield Senior School, Cantwell Sacred Heart of Mary School, Louisville High School and Mt. St. Mary's University to provide food for more than 100 families.

La Reina readies for Christmas

In reflecting on her hobby of painting, Sr. Joyanne said, "I try to use photos from places I’ve visited for inspiration, such as the Huntington Library and Gardens in San Marino and Descanso Gardens in La Canada. I feel very close to God when I am painting. I can close out the world around me, the frustrations and challenges of the day and zone in on the goodness of God in the beauty of His creation.
