Mark's Monthly Message

Mark Haney, Manager Mission Arts & Culture

“Culture is the bedrock, the final wall, against which one leans one’s back in a godforsaken chaos.” - J.C. Powys

Culture is a word and concept that is very hard to define, as it is always evolving, growing and changing. A definition I’m fond of is “the ideas, customs, and social behaviour of a particular people or society”. That’s broad enough to encompass so many things, which is exactly the work Arts and Culture is undertaking this year.

If culture is about identity, then what does culture mean to you? What does it mean to ... click here to read more...

Call for Culture

Melissa here! Since September I've been working through SFU's certificate in Civic Engagement and Dialogue and it's been one of those, "thought it was one thing, but it's something bigger and better" experiences.

Looking back one of the major threads that runs through the program, is what can we do with the roles we play to get people to connect and better understand one another? And how can we work within the confines of existing systems or perhaps work to shift the systems all together to have a more equitable and caring society? For me this education is like hearing a note with perfect pitch, resonating and supporting why I do the work I do and what my heart wants for the Mission community.

And you know what? There are others in the community that I know want to do this work too. (I've met many in fact!) And as stars do, they align, and Mission Arts & Culture has partnered with Mission Community Services and Mission's Local Immigration Partnership, to host a Culture Café Engagement session March 28, 11:30-3:30pm (lunch provided) where we will shape the Culture Expo taking place this fall through exploring Mission's identity, culture and then investigate how we can work together to showcase the multifaceted dimensions of identity that collectively make Mission the brilliant place where we live, work and play.

Showcases of Art

February was a fantastic month with some fun and thought-provoking pieces to reflect on. Identity was a theme woven into the events we hosted and we explored how our environment, historical context and imagination influence culture.

The Leisure Centre display cases have a heritage story to tell as the Museum & Archives stirred the pot by exploring food as an identifier of a different historical time. Their display is an exhibit that nods to BC Heritage Week's Food theme and will be on display until Mid March.

Also, this past month, Métis culture beautifully showcased through the Clarke Theatre Presents offering of Where Have All the Buffalo Gone. And just so we could go a bit deeper, Alison, our Outreach & Engagement leader, brought a Free! Traditional Jigging workshop to the community. This workshop was facilitated by the talented Fergus Dalton with Kathleen Nisbet on the fiddle.

And with that tough act to follow, we hosted an incredible Family Day event at the Clarke Theatre, Families had the opportunity to explore, express, and play around with their "Super hero" identity. They crafted shields and power cuffs, dawned face paint masks and put their balance, agility, and strength to the test at a variety of stations. Even the staff expressed their super powers of creativity with cool costumes to run with the theme. Check out our highlight reel on YouTube or Instagram.

And if while reading this you're experiencing FOMO, don't worry there is more cool projects and events in queue. So stay connected and don't hesitate to reach out.
