Surface Area and Concealment of Targets

When establishing training scenarios, it is common to vary the amount (i.e., mass) of targets used. One session may involve several ounces of the target material, while the next session involves several pounds. Although this is good practice, it has resulted in narrowed thinking: Many K9 trainers and handlers think solely about target mass when attempting to vary odor intensity. In reality, surface area and concealment of the target are much more important factors.
EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. — Search and rescue teams of El Paso, Teller, and Fremont Counties had a special training day with their K9s on Saturday.

The K9s practiced air scenting, trailing, and skills for detecting human remains.
Molotov cocktails, rowdy crowds, and canines chomping at the bit set the scene for population protection and control (PPC) training in Townsville. The infantry sections integrated closely with military police assets, which provided critical arrest teams, detainee processing capabilities, and working dogs to enhance security, crowd dispersion, and high-value target extraction.
MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. — A contraband bust at a Georgia state prison led to the seizure of over 500 grams of marijuana and more than 500 grams of meth. On July 3, K9 officers at Baldwin State Prison intercepted contraband before it made its way into the facility.
