From Bishop Fisher:
We Must Confront Racism Within and Without
|
|
"
The killing of George Floyd points to the racism that is part of our society, embedded in our history, systems and institutions – including the Church. People of faith cannot ignore the unconscious racism that dwells in our own hearts and minds. We must confront it within and without.
Mr. Floyd’s murder is yet another in a centuries-long line. Not decades, but centuries. Our Presiding Bishop, in
a joint statement with the Bishop-elect of Minnesota
, reminded us that we are not powerless in the face of racism. 'We are not, however, slaves to our fate … unless we choose to do nothing.'

The following letter invites everyone in The Episcopal Church to participate in a survey about sexual misconduct in the denomination

Responses requested by: July 1, 2020
"Dear People of God in the Episcopal Church:
In early 2018, we issued a call for The Episcopal Church to come to a fuller understanding of how it has handled or mishandled cases of sexual harassment, exploitation and abuse through the years. That work began to take shape at General Convention 2018 when the House of Deputies Special Committee on Sexual Harassment and Exploitation submitted more than twenty resolutions and the House of Bishops held a Liturgy of Listening to lament and confess the church’s role in harassment, exploitation and abuse."

The Poor People's Campaign, a National Call for Moral Action will go digital on June 20, 2020, for a Mass Assembly and March on Washington.
Indications are that thousands of people will be tuning in online or on MSNBC's platforms to hear directly from people directly impacted by poverty and its intersections: systemic racism, ecological devastation, militarism and the war economy, and religious nationalism. In addition to the speakers, several activist celebrities will be on hand to endorse the Poor People's Campaign's agenda.
In the meantime, the Reverend Melanie Mullen, the national Episcopal Church's director of reconciliation, justice and creation care, will host a webinar on June 10, "The Jesus Movement and the Poor People's Campaign."
Registration information can be found here.
The Episcopal Church in America was the second denomination to join the Poor People's Campaign.

Reimagining Policing | A 3-Part Series
|
The role of policing was imagined once. Yet the horrors of the ongoing War on Drugs, mass incarceration, and the police brutality that resulted in the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and many other black and brown men, women and children, require us as people of faith and good will to use our collective energy to reimagine the role of policing today.
The status quo is no longer an option.
Let’s dream together to find a better way.
Panelists will first cover the history, policy, and practice of policing, then we will have breakout sessions to hear from you. We invite you to bring your ideas and dreams to this engaging discussion as we work, by faith, to reimagine policing.
