Chaplaincy for Climate and Earth: Doing the Work
Nov 26, 12pm ET
Online
"As the real effects of the climate crisis are felt across all nations and peoples, there is such great need for responsive, skilled, compassionate spiritual care to address the short-term and long-term needs of those who are, and will be, affected by these new realities. The conditions to which we must adapt, and the changed landscapes of which we must make sense, require adjusted spiritual understandings for each of us, as well as the support that will enable us to make those adjustments.
But what exactly is 'The Work'? Our presenter, Lauren Van Ham, has asked and answered this question for herself in roles as varied as our society itself: working with multi-national corporations and non-profit organizations; teaching, coaching and mentoring; and creating ceremonies, prayers, and writings. Politics of the Mind: Marxism and Mental Distress |
Dec 12, 5pm ET
Online
"Drawing on his book Politics of the Mind: Marxism and Mental Distress (Bookmarks, 2nd ed., 2023), featured speaker Iain Ferguson, PhD, will challenge dominant biomedical models of mental distress and explore his belief that the roots of the current mental health crisis lie primarily in the ideology and operations of neoliberal capitalism, not in our brains and genes.
Dr. Ferguson will explain how Marx’s theory of alienation provides a framework for understanding the ways in which capitalism denies our most basic emotional needs—and most importantly, how collective resistance which challenges alienation can be good for our mental health, a topic he will explore in the context of social models of mental health in social work practice."
