Mission Moment: Albert Guzman
Albert Guzman was born with an eye condition that caused him to lose his peripheral vision and his ability to see color. However, his life is anything but monochromatic.

Albert has a refreshingly positive outlook on life and always tries his best to help others.

“I like to make people laugh,” Albert said. “If I see anyone having issues, I try my best to be a friend.”

His positive attitude earned him the 2019 Spirit Award at the San Antonio Lighthouse.

“That was a big deal for me,” Albert said.

He joined the San Antonio Lighthouse five years ago and has since become a versatile machine operator with experience working in many departments.

“I’ve met a lot of wonderful people here who helped me mature,” Albert said. “They showed me how to have good work ethic and I learned how to communicate better with people.”

Albert takes the initiative to learn new operations and has even mastered machines that were previously run by sighted employees. At one point, he worked as a Quality Assurance Inspector, but eventually made his way back to the production side. Albert has served as a key machine operator for many projects, including the current CTAPS Arctic Trouser Project.

"Albert is an excellent representative of the San Antonio Lighthouse’s mission and culture," said Senior Manager of Supply Chain Robin Catalan.
Dining in the Dark Recap
San Antonio Lighthouse for the Blind hosted Dining in the Dark, a gourmet experience under blindfold, at the Old San Francisco Steakhouse on Feb. 14.

More than 200 guests had an opportunity to indulge in a three-course meal while experiencing the perspective of individuals with vision loss.

Throughout the evening, San Antonio Lighthouse representative LaKisha Holmes shared how she navigates dinner, and life in general, without sight.

In addition to working full-time at the San Antonio Lighthouse, LaKisha is earning her Master of Science in Clinical Rehabilitation Counseling and runs her own small business. She is also a mother of two children ages 5 and 3. Her partner, Axel, is also blind.

The immersive event featured blind wine and bourbon tastings, as well as blind aromatherapy with guided breathing techniques.

Funds raised will support services provided by the San Antonio Lighthouse.
